Jose Angel Pahuamba Sculptures

Mexican, b. 1978
Loyal to his origins, Pahuamba creates pieces composed of analysis and social criticism of his native village. With humor, irony, and sarcasm, he tells us stories of everyday life in Cherán, Michoacán. Masks are an element often shown in his artwork, with playfulness and even irony to express strength and traditions that enhance their cultural identity as an indigenous village. Pahuamaba has a degree in Visual Arts. He has worked with recognized artists like Ismael Guardado, Pedro Ascencio, Nunik Sauret and Beatriz Gaminde, and others. His artworks has been exhibited individually in galleries in CDMX, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Chile, New York and Michoacán. Author of the book "Between colors, lines, and monkeys". Didactic guide of plastic arts for children. And author of the murals Lucha entre aztecas y purepechas (Fundación FORNESA, Morelia, Michoacán), La Fiesta del Maíz (Baltimore Maryland, USA) and Principio y fin (Valparaíso, Chile). He has been awarded the Acquisition Award of the State Watercolor Salon in 2005 and 2011; Acquisition Prize in the “Efraín Vargas” State Painting and Stamp Contest in 2009; Fellow of the State Co-investment Program. In 2011 he received an honorable mention at the “Alfredo Zalce” National Biennial.

Balloon Dog (Blue) 2021. Porcelain with metallic chromatic coating Limited edition of 69/799 ex. Certificate of authenticity and the original box. Incised signature, edition number, titled and dated on the underside. Produced by Bernardaud, Limoges, France. Jeff Koons is an American pop artist, born in York, Pennsylvania in 1955 to a mother who was a seamstress and a father who worked as an interior decorator. He is known for working with popular culture subjects and for his reproductions of banal objects. His works have sold for important amounts, including one world record auction price for a work by a living artist. Jeff Koons had an early interest in art and as a teenager he admired Salvador Dalí. He studied painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. As a student he met the artist Ed Paschke who became a major influence and for whom he worked as a studio assistant in the late 1970’s. In 1977 Jeff Koons moved to New York City where he worked at the Museum of Modern Art whilst establishing himself as an artist. In the 1980’s he began working as a Wall Street commodities broker in order to finance his art projects. He wanted to be independent from the art market and has expressed that: ”I could make exactly what art I wanted to make. And I would always know that I didn’t need the art market.” In the mid-1980’s Jeff Koons gained prominence and recognition as part of a generation of artists who explored the meaning af art in a media-saturated era. He set up a factory-like studio in a SoHo loft with over 30 assistants. Since his first solo exhibition in 1980 Jeff Koon’s work has been shown in major galleries and institutions throughout the world. His work was the subject of a major exhibition organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, Jeff Koons: A Retrospective in 2014, which traveled to the Centre Pompidou Paris and then further to Guggenheim Bilbao in 2015. His most recent series, Gazing Ball Paintings, was exhibited for the first time at Gagosian Gallery, New York in 2015. The artist has earned renown for his public sculptures, such as the monumental...

By Michael Thompson

Located in Chicago, IL

Based in Chicago, IL, contemporary artist Michael Thompson creates unique kites, collages and mixed media works assembled from material fragments of past and present collected in his travels. In his ongoing series of memory jugs, Thompson adorns stoneware vessels with a kaleidoscope of ceramic shards, found objects, and pocket-sized trinkets he collected over the course of his life. Also known as forget-me-not jugs or spirit jars, memory jugs are African American folk art objects that honor a loved one who has recently passed. Small tokens and mementos of the deceased are gathered and affixed to the exterior of a jug or vase, an abundance of memories that celebrates a life lived to the fullest. Michael Thompson applies this tradition to his own practice, creating tactile assemblages of this and that. Formed in the manner of collage, each jug honors the lost memories of generations past and his own memories of personally discovering each item. With varied sources for materials including Kyoto, Turkey, and Mexico, a great number of the found shards are 18th and 19th century ceramics...
