John Dalzell Kenworthy ARCA (5 Nov 1858 - 4 Mar 1954) was an internationally acclaimed artist, sculptor and writer who was born at Whitehaven into a prominent West Cumbrian family. JD Kenworthy was a noted Cumberland artist, who lived at Seacroft House, St Bees, a coastal village south of Whitehaven. He painted both portraits and landscapes, in oil and watercolour in the 50 years centred on the turn of the twentieth century. He was an associate of the Royal Cambrian Academy (1914) and he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, as well as at galleries across Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool. He travelled to paint in Scotland and France, where he became particularly well known. He also was a keen angler, and wrote a book in 1933 called 'Fisherman's Philosophy', in which he discusses Scottish salmon and loch trout, and fishing on the French Mediterranean coast. Kenworthy's works are held in the public collections of the Beacon Museum and Helena Thompson Museum. JD Kenworthy's portraits include two of 1st World War veterans, AJ Wandless a Master Mariner and Whitehaven war hero Abraham Acton. He also painted portraits of other notable people, including the Mayor of Whitehaven, Reverend Rees Keene, Dr James Irving Lace,[6] Justices of the Peace James Gibson Dees and Alderman Joseph Braithwaite and one of the aero chocolate...

Mid 19th Century oil on canvas portrait of an Italian brigand, unsigned, in painted wood and gilt frame. The painting is a fine and fascinating rendition with plenty of wonderful character and detail to the costume, accessories, landscape and seascape. Very atmospheric and imposing much like the character it portrays. There is a trade stamp to the back of the canvas for the Paris firm of Susse Freres. The canvas is on a fine quality stretcher with 'keys'. There is an artist's name or title written on the top of the rear stretcher (see photo). Bands of brigands who populated the hills of southern Italy were steady fodder for the Romantic imagination, and their exploits were reported both factually, fancifully and artistically The painting dates from a period when France, under its then leader Napoleon III, was involved in the conflicts in the Italian states and the unification and eventual creation of the nation of Italy. When Johnny left school, there were many interests which ran alongside his career at the time in the City of London as an Aviation Insurance Broker at Lloyds – writing music, playing with a band, tinkering with Vintage cars, marketing various inventions and making painting trips when possible – it wasn’t long before the Arts beckoned and at twenty six he won a place at the Fine Arts Academy in Florence where he moved in 1972. A year later, moving near Lake Trasimeno, he continued his studies at the Fine Arts Academy in Perugia. Again on the move, he travelled to Pietrasanta near Carrara with some sculptors and stayed on this coast for nearly a year before moving eventually to Grimaldi, just inside Italy – a small medieval village about three hundred yards from the Italian /French frontier close to Monte Carlo. Here he began a series of backstage paintings – at the Opera and Orchestra rehearsals, fashion shows, at the Circus, Jazz and Cabaret – exhibiting regularly along the coast in Monaco, Nice, Cannes and Antibes. In 1984, circumstances changed and it was necessary to return to England – where a chance invitation to the races triggered a whole new series ‘At the Races’ which in time produced a wider series entitled ‘The British Sporting Year’ of Polo, The Henley Regatta, Derby Day, Wimbledon, Bowls, Cricket, Golf – even Jousting at Hever Castle...
