Jules Coignet Art
Jules Louis Philippe Coignet was born on November 2, 1798, in Paris and he died in Paris on 1st April 1860. He was a French painter of the School of Barbizon. Coignet was the pupil of Jean-Victor Bertin, he had the same taste as his master for landscape painting. He asserted his artistic sensibility by leaving the studio to paint from nature in a picturesque style, more visual and less stilted than the classic or romantic way of his predecessors. Coignet is the author of a large number of paintings depicting views and landscapes painted during his many travels in Tyrol and the country of Baden, Switzerland, Italy and Sicily, Egypt and Lebanon in the East, as well as in several provinces of France, notably Brittany and the Isère Valley. Coignet was made Knight of the Legion of Honor on April 30, 1836. Author of numerous paintings, pastel drawings and watercolors, Coignet also worked as a portrait painter. As a lithographer, he has also engraved and published several series of prints of his composition as well as other artists. In 1834–45, Coignet organized two public sales of his production, highly appreciated by art lovers. After his death, his workshop was dispersed in the public sale on April 8, 1861. Coignet's works are found in numerous Museums such as the National Gallery of Washington, Museum of Modern art of New York, the Fitzwilliam Museum of Cambridge, Louvre Museum in Paris and numerous Fine Arts Museums in France.
