Kenny Scharf More Art

American, b. 1958

Kenny Scharf is a renowned artist affiliated with the 1980s-era East Village art movement in New York City.

Scharf developed a distinct and uniquely personal artistic style in paintings and prints as well as sculpture, alongside his mentor Andy Warhol, and contemporaries like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring with whom he pioneered contemporary street art. References to popular culture reoccur throughout Scharf's works, such as appropriated cartoon characters from the "Flintstones" and "Jetsons," as well as imagined anthropomorphic creatures. Through ecstatic compositions and a dazzling color palette, he presents an immersive viewing experience that is both intimate and fresh.

Scharf's multifaceted practice — spanning painting, sculpture, installation work, murals, performance and fashion — reflects his dedication to the creation of dynamic forms of art that deconstruct existing artistic hierarchies, echoing the philosophy of Pop artists. Yet Scharf’s artistic significance expands beyond the art historical terrain of Pop art; the artist instead coined the term “Pop Surrealist” to describe his one-of-a-kind practice. His inclusion in the 1985 Whitney Biennial marked the start of his international phenomenon, a reputation that continues to thrive today.

Untitled #1, 1964 from New York Ten
By Mon Levinson
Located in New York, NY
This dynamic work was realized by the esteemed 20th Century modern artist Mon Levinson in 1964. The work was realized in 1964, and printed in 1965 by Chiron Press in New York- the same year that Levinson was included in the seminal Op-Art exhibition "The Responsive Eye", alongside contemporary luminaries such as Bridget Riley. An identical work from this edition resides in the permanent collection of the New York MoMA. This mixed media work consists of an translucent vinyl sheet layered over a print- part etching, part lithograph. The clear vinyl sheet is embossed with a tight pattern of sinuously curved repeating black lines and is subtly raised in places- creating a subtle three dimensionality and dynamic sense of movement. The paper is inscribed with the same recurring pattern of snaking black lines, like a fine filigree, with two weighty black geometric forms that appear to crowd the composition. Smaller geometric forms reside within creating the apparition of negative space in the bone hued paper. The juxtaposition of the delicate texture and colossal feeling forms imbues the piece with a stunning dynamism and tension, helping to explain why Levinson is among the most influential and important artist to come out of the Op Art movement. His work is in the permanent collections of important institutions around the world including the Museum of Modern Art as well as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Signed by the artist and marked 18/200. The work comes presented in a custom walnut and white gilt frame...

Munich Olympic Games Art Series
By Serge Poliakoff
Located in Winterswijk, NL
Shipping on request This impressive offset lithograph by Serge Poliakoff, a significant figure in abstract art, captures the powerful dynamism of his work. The skillful interplay of red and blue in this harmonious artwork from 1972, part of the Munich Olympic Games Art Series, creates a fascinating visual tension and bestows upon the space an aura of refinement and elegance. Poliakoff's mastery in abstraction is evident in a composition that is both energetic and balanced. Signed in stone by the artist, this vintage piece encapsulates the essence of its time and is a valuable addition to any art collection. Serge Poliakoff, born on January 8, 1900, in Moscow, Russia, was a prominent figure in 20th-century abstract art. After relocating to Paris in 1923 and briefly pursuing a career as a cabaret guitarist, he found his calling in painting. By 1935, he increasingly embraced abstraction, utilizing color without representational references. Poliakoff developed a unique form of abstract painting, juxtaposing colored fields. In the 1940s, he predominantly worked with shades of gray and brown before expanding his palette to include vibrant, contrasting colors from 1950 onwards. His later works were characterized by a reduction in color intensity to earthy tones and a tendency towards monochromatic compositions. This evolution reflected his artistic maturity and pursuit of expressive depth. Serge Poliakoff's works are renowned for their powerful abstraction and subtle mastery of color. He passed away on October 12...
