Kristy Chettle Art

American, b. 1982
Kristy Chettle (b. 1968, Bellflower, CA) is a dynamic abstract artist who paints using only her hands. She works in a sort of “focused frenzy”, painting expressive works deep with bold colors in complex layers. After earning a degree in Art & Design, she began her professional career as a graphic designer and now seeks to deconstruct the confines of modern media. As a California native, she is compelled to explore themes such as nature, metamorphosis, and personal growth, which are reflective of the ever-changing environment of the region. Using a vibrant and sometimes unexpected color pallet, Chettle’s work is expressive featuring heavy strokes and dramatic motion. Using multiple layers she creates a complex, almost tactile surface, inviting the viewer to dive into the painting and explore its depths. The artist sees her style as a liberation from the rigid rules of marketing, yet she intuitively implements the disciplines she was taught. Working primarily with complimentary colors, her paintings are lively and raw with color vibrating throughout from layers deep within the work. Kristy has been a professional abstract artist for many years. Her artwork hangs in the homes of those who appreciate art that reflects expressive motion and color with thick layers of texture and meaning. Inspired by some of the greats—Picasso and Van Gogh in particular—she aspires to replicate the depth and life that their works portray.

A captivating exploration of color, texture, and movement, "Untitled No. 29" is a 48" x 48" oil on canvas by contemporary artist Kristy Chettle. This striking abstract work features a harmonious blend of soft blues, whites, and grays, energized by dynamic bursts of yellow, orange, and red. Chettle’s expressive brushwork and layering techniques create an ethereal sense of depth, drawing the viewer into its vibrant and emotive surface. The painting’s gestural marks and textured passages evoke a balance between spontaneity and intentionality, inviting introspection and interpretation. Perfect for modern interiors, "Untitled No. 29" is a bold yet tranquil statement piece, ideal for collectors who appreciate contemporary abstraction and the legacy of Abstract Expressionism. Chettle’s masterful use of oil paint offers both visual energy and a calming atmosphere, making this work a versatile addition to any collection. About the Artist: As a California native (b. 1968, Los Angeles, CA), Kristy Chettle’s paintings explore reflective and thought-provoking themes of nature, transformation, and self-empowerment. Using only her hands and an occasional pallet knife, she paints in multiple layers, sometimes scraping off the paint with her fingers only to reapply a new color later, resulting in a deep texture and raw motion. Occasionally she scrawls her thoughts and emotions into the canvas or uses recycled paper or old screens...

OYV-19 is part of Eric Mack's ongoing body of work utilizing multi-media, complex compositions, and a grid centered around urban design. Using a grid to create the framework of the painting, Mack has re-purposed an old Lenny Kravitz album cover as the structure of the piece. On the edges of the piece you can see a complex edge consisting of a faux leather album cover, nylon mesh, and torn paper. As imagery, Mack has chosen musical notes, tape measure, and other music composition elements through Zerox copy adhered by matte medium to the surface. Mack then creates his own color to further tweak and personalize the piece. Eric Mack (b.1976, Charleston) creates mathematically based renderings with a distinct post-modern twist. Works are informed with super imposed grids, patterns, and portals. Layered surfaces are created with paint, found objects, natural fibers, and synthetic substrates that explore the systems of our visual world. His most recent show “Charting the Terrain” is on view now at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles was covered by the Los Angeles Times, KCRW, and LALA Magazine. His last solo exhibition was titled "Impossible Architectures" at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2017. Paradox of St. Sebastian - Contemporary Oil Painting with Graffiti and Shackles

By Bruno Surdo

Located in Chicago, IL

This painting is Bruno Surdo’s contemporary reimagining of Saint Sebastian, one of the most enduring subjects in Western art. From Mantegna and Botticelli to Guido Reni and Caravaggio, Sebastian has long been depicted as the bound, arrow-pierced martyr whose physical suffering becomes an image of spiritual transcendence. Surdo clearly situates himself within this lineage: the contrapposto pose, uplifted gaze, and carefully modeled anatomy reflect his atelier training and deep engagement with Renaissance ideals of the heroic nude. The flesh is luminous and sculptural, recalling Michelangelo’s influence on the canon of the male body as both aesthetic and symbolic form. Yet Surdo decisively destabilizes the tradition. The arrows piercing the body are not lethal shafts but rubber suction-cup darts—objects associated with toys and staged play. This substitution transforms martyrdom into performance. The gravity of sacred suffering is undercut by irony, even absurdity. The saint is no longer impaled by instruments of death but by harmless projectiles, suggesting that contemporary suffering may be theatricalized, trivialized, or culturally mediated. At the same time, the figure’s expression remains sincere and emotionally vulnerable; the psychological intensity is real, even if the wounds are not. This tension between authentic emotion and artificial harm introduces a modern critique of spectacle—how pain can be aestheticized, simulated, or consumed. The graffiti-covered urban wall further collapses sacred history into contemporary space. Instead of a devotional landscape or heavenly backdrop, Surdo situates his Sebastian against a chaotic, tagged surface, merging classical beauty with raw urban immediacy. Saint Sebastian has long functioned not only as a symbol of faith but also as an emblem of sensualized male beauty and coded identity in art history. Surdo acknowledges that layered tradition while reframing it through irony and cultural commentary. By replacing deadly arrows with toy darts, he transforms martyrdom into a meditation on vulnerability in an age where suffering may be symbolic rather than fatal—performed, projected, or socially inflicted rather than divinely ordained. As in much of his work, Surdo grounds contemporary psychological tension in the authority of Renaissance form, using the language of history painting to question what sanctity, sacrifice, and spectacle mean today.
