Leo Matiz Art

1917-1998

Leo Matiz was a Colombian photographer, caricaturist, newspaper publisher, painter and gallery owner. Matiz was born in the small village of Aracataca in the Magdalena Department of Colombia to father Tulio Matiz and mother Eva Matiz. His hometown is also the birthplace of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He travelled widely and sold caricatures and illustrations to earn a living. In 1951, Matiz's gallery hosted the first exhibition of Colombian artist Fernando Botero with a showing of his paintings at the Bogotá gallery. Matiz was known for his sense of style including a thick slightly long hair, colored jackets and gangster style mustache. He had a robust laugh and carried his caricatures and drawings in a folder. He was at the center of the bohemian intellectualism of Bogotá, Caracas, Mexico City and other Latin American capital centers. He photographed Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Esther Williams, Janice Logan, David Alfaro Siqueiros, the first castings of María Félix, Luis Buñuel, Marc Chagall, Louis Armstrong, Álvaro Mutis, Pablo Neruda, Walt Disney, Enrique Santos Montejo, “Calibán”, Lucho Bermúdez, Agustín Lara, Gabriel Figueroa, Esther Fernandez, José Clemente Orozco, Mario Moreno Cantinflas, and Dolores del Río. Matiz was influenced by Mexican cinema, geography, architecture, history, muralism and history as well as the artists Gustave Doré, George Grozt, Nadar and Guadalupe Posada. He was a photographer for Asi, Life, Reader's Digest, Harper Magazine, Look and Norte. Matiz had a high profile and intense dispute with David Alfaro Siqueiros. Later in life, Matiz lost an eye after a robber hit him with a wooden stick and tried to steal his camera and bicycle. He continued photographing with an eye patch. Matiz died in Bogotá, Colombia, on October 24, 1998. The Foundation Leo Matiz was established to preserve his legacy.

Hand on the Camera, Mexico. Figurative black and white photograph
By Leo Matiz
Located in Miami Beach, FL
Black and white photographs that reveal the various facets and aesthetic searches of the legendary Colombian photographer, recognized as the creator of memorable realistic, abstract and avant-garde images. They turned Leo Matiz into one of the most original and innovative personalities of universal photography in the 20th century. Leo Matiz is considered one of the tenth most influential photographers of the 20th century. His work as a photojournalist led him to travel extensively around the world, meeting and making friends with some of the most relevant figures of the 20th century. Matiz was an artist who never waited for beauty to come looking for him. He looked for her with his camera, wherever she was, whether it was the face of a child lost on a city street, a landscape, architectural wonders or the now famous portraits of the legendary artist Frida Kahlo. From Black & White Series Selenium print...

The Robin Rice Gallery reserves the right to adjust this price depending on the current edition of the photograph. Ted Adams’ first solo show at the Robin Rice Gallery juxtaposes surrealism with the documentary art form. What differentiates Mr. Adams’ work from traditional photojournalism is his keen eye for capturing the irony in the events that unfold before our eyes. It is the found objects in everyday life to which Adams is most attuned. He creates a subtle mood and visual mystery that conveys meaning not only from the image itself but also through imagining what exists just beyond the frame. "I see photography as a way of cropping the world—selectively taking things out of context—which often results in stripping the meaning out of the original subject matter, or at least making the image open to interpretation. It’s the opposite of traditional photojournalism whose intention is to create ‘narrative’ and context rather than discard them." While he has exhibited artistic photography in a variety of genres, in the past five years he turned his artistic eye inward to reflect a more autobiographical tone. While some people compare his work to that of Robert Frank, Adams finds himself more and more influenced by Larry Clark whose career was built on pictures drawn from his own life and drug-addled friends rather than a specific documentary mission. The unique presentation of this collection of twenty-three silver gelatin prints enhances the voyeuristic sensibility of Mr. Adams’ work. Each photograph is jewel box in size, measuring 4" x 6" to invite the viewer in to make an intimate appraisal. The craftsmanship of the wide, dark wood frames hearkens back to late 19th-century Shaker design—yet the aesthetic is boldly contemporary, providing a strong backdrop to draw the viewer’s gaze directly to the subject matter. This artisanship extends to the printing where Adams exhibits his skills in traditional darkroom processes. He shoots mostly with Leica and Nikon 35mm film cameras...
