The seated animal is in an attacking position, teeth bared, ears flattened, and paw extended to strike the ball. The situation is skillfully captured, and the overall arrangement of materials and colors is harmonious. The jade edging is interrupted at the front and back by black stripes in marble, and the panther has a very beautiful patina. The sculptor Louis Albert Carvin mainly described animals, especially through episodes from la fontaine fables, but also occasionally wrote some genre scenes. His submissions to the Salon from 1891 until the 1930s consisted mainly of marble sujets. The foundry Susse Frères was a company in Paris run from 1804 to 1975 by the French Susse family, whose members over five generations were primarily involved in the manufacture and publishing of art supplies, in addition to stationery products and briefly photographic cameras...
