Lucien Adrion Paintings

French, 1889-1953

Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889, in Strasbourg, France. He was a French post-Impressionist painter, draftsman and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out, he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, he went on to study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck, who was Marc Chagall's teacher as well. Adrion returned to his hometown in France in 1919, and then eventually moved to Paris, where he took a studio in Montparnasse of Paris and allied himself primarily with the young Eastern European painters such as Chaïm Soutine, Pinchus Krémègne, and Michel Kikoïne to operate. In 1921, Adrion had his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Chéron and then in 1926, at the age of 37, he had his first major exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants, where later on, he exhibited regularly. In 1940, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and the following year at the Salon des Tuileries where he exhibited several landscapes. As an engraver, watercolorist and painter from the French school, he took a variety of external scenes as subjects for his work, showing a particular fondness for the picturesque aspects of the Parisian landscape, beach scenes, and horse races. Throughout his career, Adrion continued to exhibit his work at the Salons in Paris, where his paintings were praised for their ability to capture the movement and transience of urban life. He eventually left Paris to settle in Normandy, where he began focusing on beach landscapes subject, with great success because they became very popular as decorative paintings.

"Marina in the French Riviera" Post-Impressionist Sea Shore Boats Oil Painting

By Lucien Adrion

Located in New York, NY

This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his Post-Impressionist works at the seashore by the French Riviera. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with many boats situated along the marina. There are palm trees and buildings placed in the distance, as we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The boats are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of enjoyment from that sunny day at the marina. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent, we can find several of his works like this subject and others. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a French giltwood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Title: Sitges Artist: Rafael Durancamps i Folguera (1891–1979) Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 38 x 61 cm (14.96 x 24.01 in) Support: Canvas stretched over wooden stretcher Framing: Unframed Signature: Signed lower left: Durancamps Period: 1960s (estimated based on style, technique, and materials) Work Description The painting Sitges depicts an evocative scene of the iconic Catalan coastal town. At the center stands the unmistakable silhouette of the Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, surrounded by cascading white houses that descend toward the shore. A solitary fisherman in the foreground casts his rod from the sand, adding a human and melancholic dimension to the landscape. The composition reflects Rafael Durancamps’s mastery in atmospheric construction: the balance between sky, architecture, and figure is achieved through loose yet controlled brushstrokes, and a sober palette dominated by earthy tones, ochres, blues, and greys. The scene conveys stillness, everyday life, and a sense of belonging to the landscape—recurring qualities in the artist’s work. Artist Biography: Rafael Durancamps i Folguera (1891–1979) Born in Sabadell, Rafael Durancamps was one of the leading Catalan figurative painters of the 20th century. Initially trained under Joan Vila Cinca and a friend of Joaquim Mir, he chose a personal path that distanced him from avant-garde movements. In 1926, he moved to Paris, where he founded La Fenêtre Ouverte gallery, bringing together artists such as Salvador Dalí, André Derain, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso. After permanently returning to Barcelona in 1939, he exhibited regularly at Sala Parés and established a distinctive style rooted in lyrical light, intimate observation of everyday life, and a refined technique—particularly in still lifes, landscapes, and solitary figures. His work is held in major collections, including the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the Montserrat Museum, the Sabadell Art Museum, and the BBVA Collection. Comparable Artists Rafael Durancamps can be linked stylistically or spiritually to several major names in modern figurative art: Joaquim Mir – for his lyrical treatment of the Catalan landscape and vibrant light Santiago Rusiñol – for his poetic approach to architecture and the Mediterranean environment Maurice Utrillo – in his sober and nostalgic depictions of towns and vernacular architecture Edward Hopper – for the silent presence of solitary figures in open spaces Darío de Regoyos...

Pêcheurs Sur Les Rochers 1930s Framed Provencal Côte d'Azur Oil Painting

Gustave Vidal. French ( b.1895 - d.1966 ). Pêcheurs Sur Les Rochers. Bord De Mer En Côte d'Azur. Oil On Panel. Signed Lower Right. Image size 12.4 inches x 15.6 inches ( 31.5cm x 39.5cm ). Frame size 22.2 inches x 26 inches ( 56.5cm x 66cm ). Available for sale, this original oil painting is by the French artist Gustave Vidal and dates from around 1935. The painting is presented and supplied in its original frame. The original cotton slip has been replaced with a sympathetic contemporary slip that is in keeping with the fresh coastal aesthetic of the painting (which is shown in these photographs). This antique painting is in a good condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed lower right. Gustave Vidal was a 20th century French artist, and one of the best Provencal landscapers of his generation. He worked in the Provencal and Basque regions as well as Corsica and the centre of France. He was born in Avignon in 1895, in the Provence region of France, and died in the same town in 1966. Vidal trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon. It is often reported that he studied under Pierre Grivolas, (1823-1906) who was a prominent teacher there who had encouraged plein air painting to capture light and colour directly from nature. However, Grivolas died when Vidal was only 9 or 10, so it is very unlikely that there was a direct teacher/student relationship between them in a formal apprenticeship or atelier setting. Pierre Grivolas had been a director of the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon until his death in 1906, and found what became known as the Nouvelle école d’Avignon, promoting outdoor practice and modern landscape painting. Grivolas influenced a generation of Provençal painters directly, and his teachings persisted after his death. Vidal therefore studied in the establishment that continued his ethos and would have been influenced by Grivolas’ directorship. Vidal won numerous awards at the Beaux-Arts in Avignon and became a sociétaire (member) of the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, an important exhibition venue for French artists of the period. He actually wrote the articles of association for this establishment. As well as exhibiting in Avignon and Paris Vidal also exhibited in Berlin and Brussels. Vidal was primarily a landscape and marine painter. His work is associated with Provencal scenes — including rural landscapes, village streets, harbours, seascapes, and views of the French Riviera and interior France. His technique combined impasto application with both palette knife and brush, reflecting influences from Impressionism and post-Impressionist colourism encountered during his career, especially in Paris. This gives his canvases a textured, lively surface and strong sense of light and atmosphere. His works typically show rich colour and balanced composition, with evocative French light. Nowadays Vidal’s paintings appear regularly in antique galleries, auctions, and online sales in Europe and beyond, though he’s not commonly featured in major public museums or standard art history encyclopaedias. Auction results indicate steady interest among collectors of regional French painting, with prices varying according to size and subject. Although not among the most famous French painters of his generation, Gustave Vidal holds a solid place within early-to-mid-20th-century Provence painting, continuing the regional tradition of light, colour, and landscape that followed Impressionism, and appealing to contemporary collectors of Provençal and southern French art...
