Georges Charles Robin (1903–2003) Paintings

French, 1903-2003
Born in Paris in 1903, Georges Charles Robin was a student of Paul Michel Dupuy at École des Beaux-Arts, achieving success in his early career as a stage designer for the Charleville Theatre and the Dinan Casino. Robin travelled and painted throughout France, but was particularly attracted to Brittany, Normandy and the Loire Valley. His impressionistic portrayals of these idyllic river landscapes convey the rich colours and compelling beauty of this environment. Robin became a professor, an elected officer of the Académie des Beaux Arts, and served as a member of the jury of the legendary Paris Salon. He was highly commended, winning major French painting awards of the era and receiving commissions from European Heads of State and government. Represented by distinguished art dealers, the work of Georges Charles Robin resides in numerous important private and museum collections around the world.

Bords de l'Eure pres de Cocherel

Recognised as one of the best post-impressionist artists, Robin's skill and complete command of his palette set him aside from his contemporaries. Combining his deft and delicate touch with vigorous, dramatic brush strokes and palette knife work, he produced exceptional paintings. Enthralled by the enchanting river valleys of rural France that flowed through the luxuriant countryside and rolling fields, Robin's paintings perfectly capture rustic and typical French life. Feted by the French artistic establishment and his many patrons during his lifetime, the multitude of awards that Robin garnered for his work illustrates the acclaim in which he was held. Early oil depicting the Great Fire of London
Located in London, GB
The Great Fire of London in September 1666 was one of the greatest disasters in the city’s history. The City, with its wooden houses crowded together in narrow streets, was a natural fire risk, and predictions that London would burn down became a shocking reality. The fire began in a bakery in Pudding Lane, an area near the Thames teeming with warehouses and shops full of flammable materials, such as timber, oil, coal, pitch and turpentine. Inevitably the fire spread rapidly from this area into the City. Our painting depicts the impact of the fire on those who were caught in it and creates a very dramatic impression of what the fire was like. Closer inspection reveals a scene of chaos and panic with people running out of the gates. It shows Cripplegate in the north of the City, with St Giles without Cripplegate to its left, in flames (on the site of the present day Barbican). The painting probably represents the fire on the night of Tuesday 4 September, when four-fifths of the City was burning at once, including St Paul's Cathedral. Old St Paul’s can be seen to the right of the canvas, the medieval church with its thick stone walls, was considered a place of safety, but the building was covered in wooden scaffolding as it was in the midst of being restored by the then little known architect, Christopher Wren and caught fire. Our painting seems to depict a specific moment on the Tuesday night when the lead on St Paul’s caught fire and, as the diarist John Evelyn described: ‘the stones of Paul’s flew like grenades, the melting lead running down the streets in a stream and the very pavements glowing with the firey redness, so as no horse, nor man, was able to tread on them.’ Although the loss of life was minimal, some accounts record only sixteen perished, the magnitude of the property loss was shocking – some four hundred and thirty acres, about eighty per cent of the City proper was destroyed, including over thirteen thousand houses, eighty-nine churches, and fifty-two Guild Halls. Thousands were homeless and financially ruined. The Great Fire, and the subsequent fire of 1676, which destroyed over six hundred houses south of the Thames, changed the appearance of London forever. The one constructive outcome of the Great Fire was that the plague, which had devastated the population of London since 1665, diminished greatly, due to the mass death of the plague-carrying rats in the blaze. The fire was widely reported in eyewitness accounts, newspapers, letters and diaries. Samuel Pepys recorded climbing the steeple of Barking Church from which he viewed the destroyed City: ‘the saddest sight of desolation that I ever saw.’ There was an official enquiry into the causes of the fire, petitions to the King and Lord Mayor to rebuild, new legislation and building Acts. Naturally, the fire became a dramatic and extremely popular subject for painters and engravers. A group of works relatively closely related to the present picture have been traditionally ascribed to Jan Griffier...

Printemps
By Charles Levier
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
A beautiful woman sits at an open window, gazing down at a small bird who has landed nearby in this serene portrait by Charles Levier. Warm orange tones are played off their complements in shades of blue, the artist utilizing several different layers of oils to create a subtle and relaxed view of a spring day near the sea. Beyond the window a small chapel sits on a peninsula, surrounded tranquil blue waters. This work, like many of Levier's, belongs to the French figurative movement of the Glorious Thirty (Les Trente Glorieuses) - the golden period of thirty years after WWII which were a time of great hope and prosperity in France. Inspired by Hollywood cinema, Charles Levier sought harmony in composition and purity of color and form. His said that his creations represented "a light and delicate world, of dark and subtle shades and colors." Levier worked in a somewhat abstracted, cubist style. Additionally he often employed the French technique of "cloisonnism" (after the French for "partition"), a style of post-Impressionist painting with bold and flat forms separated by dark contours, also seen in this work. The term was coined by critic Edouard Dujardin on the occasion of the Salon des Indépendants, in March 1888 and was commonly used by artists like Émile Bernard, Louis Anquetin, Paul...

Georges Robin (1903-2003) Castelnaud seen from Saint Julien de Cénac in Dordogne
By Georges Charles Robin
Located in BELEYMAS, FR
Georges Charles ROBIN (Paris 1903 - 2003) Castelnaud seen from Saint Julien de Cénac Oil on canvas H. 80 cm ; L. 100 cm Signed lower left. Located on the back Provenance: Private collection, England Born in Paris, Georges Robin studied with the classical landscape painter and post-impressionist Paul-Michel Dupuy. This light that Dupuy's seaside work gives off is then found in the colorful veins of Robin's landscapes. But before becoming the master in landscapes known today, Georges Charles Robin cut his teeth as decorators, notably for the casino of Dinan in Brittany. It was finally quite late, in 1948, that the painter received his first official honors as a landscape designer, although he had participated in the Salon des Artistes Français since the 1920s, as in the Salon des Paysagistes Français. A few years later, he will receive the gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Français and will be classified Hors Concours until the end of his life, which represents the ultimate reward. A prolific artist until 1981, when he lost his sight, Robin devoted his career to the simple landscapes of the French countryside and seaside. You will not find any fireworks, no surreal light, no historical scenes placed in an imaginary landscape, but many real places. In love with the Dordogne and its rivers, the painter stayed in the department on numerous occasions during his travels which took him from Finistère to the Mediterranean coasts, via the banks of the Sèvre Nantaise, the Charente. , Loing or even Aumance. In the heart of Périgord, he was particularly attached to the Vézère and the Dordogne, close to tourist routes, without showing our great castles as the main subjects. Little documented, the story of this artist, who locally reminds us of the compositions of Lucien de Maleville...
