American Artist 1922 – 2012 Served his country as a Sergeant in World War II, both stateside and in the Philippines. After the war, native Chicagoan Ronald Ahlström graduated from the School of the Art Institute, He became a prominent Abstract Expressionist collage assemblage maker working in a style similar to some of the New York school assemblage artists such as Robert Goodnough. Utilizing cutout letters in a concrete poetry style. He frequently exhibited his collages and paintings in the Chicago and Vicinity exhibits of the 1950s and 1960s. He worked as the curator of the Tacoma Art Museum in Tacoma WA during the early 1960s. He showed at Exhibition Momentum in the ’60s, and was selected for the Corcoran Biennial. Together with his colleagues and fellow-abstractionists Robert Nickle, Morris Barazani, Harry Bouras, George Kokines, and George Waite, he exhibited at McCormick Place in an independently produced survey of contemporary Chicagoans, circa 1962, under the banner 12 Chicago Artists. An adept and sensitive painter, Ahlström’s most personal work is as an abstract expressionist collage maker. Using strips of paper, sometimes weathered and beaten into rough hewn surfaces, he creates immaculately layered, lively, gestural compositions. He was the recipient of many art awards and prizes throughout his long career. His works are part of numerous private, corporate and museum collections. His work was published in many national and international art publications including Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Art. he taught art at both high school and college level. His other passions included history, literature and music. He was an accomplished base fiddle and guitar player and often played professionally in clubs during the late 1940s and 1950s. In 1958, he was awarded the William H. Bartels Prize of five hundred dollars at the Art Institute of Chicago. After studying fashion design at the professional school for clothing in Bremen, 1980, Petra Rös-Nickel changed her field of study to architecture in Eckernförde, 1982. She now lives in Hamburg, Germany. Preferring the creative aspects of the studies to the technical ones, the artist developed the basics of her painting, never denying the roots of applied design and soon ending in a refreshing, distinctive style. Petra Rös-Nickel experiments with form, along with the use of a technique that draws attention to the processes used in creating a painting. Ms Romley is in her late 80's and currently based in Spain. She was trained at The École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA), a distinguished National School of Fine Arts in Paris, France. The artist won several noted awards for her art in her native Spain, and in Paris, France. She worked as an artist and also had a career in advertising, illustration and interior design, in Spain, France and New York. As an artist, she has had solo and group exhibitions first Paris, France, Monaco, Japan, Spain and the US. ETCHINGS Cuca Romley’s etchings of both famous and little places around the world are depicted with a remarkable attention to detail, a style that belies her sophisticated sense of line and color. These etchings capture a bygone era of a city in flux, and a snap shot of a classic image of a place. Each plate is etched with patience and a thoroughness reminiscence of the earlier days of engraving, in exquisite and fine detail. Romley creates her intricate design on the etching ground that covers the copper plate. After the acid has etched the lines into the copper plate she engraves the details into the plate with a buril until the image is completed. For each individual print a master printer must ink the plate and wipe the surface clean. The plate is placed on the bed of the press and the previously wet French Arches paper 100% cotton covering the plate to pass through the press, and that completes the printing process. After the printing ink has dried for a couple of days, the etching is ready for the hand coloring by the artist. There are often more than 30 colors in one of Romley’s images. Each print can take up to 6 hours to color; these colors impart a subtle transparent effect that compliments the delicacy of the line.
