Mary Fedden Art

British, 1915-2012
Mary Fedden was a Modern British painter, printmaker and illustrator. Born in Bristol to a family of surgeons, from childhood Fedden had wanted to become a painter. At the age of sixteen Fedden left Badminton School to study at the Slade School of Art, London, where she stayed for four years. She studied under the designer Vladimir Polunin who had previously worked with the Ballets Russes. She was employed by Sadlers Wells Theatre to create sets but decided to return to Bristol soon after. Here she taught and painted portraits, before serving in the Land Army and Women's Voluntary Service during the Second World War. She was called up in 1944 and was sent abroad to work as a driver for the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI). Fedden settled back in London after the war, where she worked for the Arts Theatre in Great Newport Street as a stage painter whilst also producing propaganda murals. Fedden decided against a career of stage design and in 1946 was able to resume easel painting and her first solo exhibition followed the next year at the Mansard Gallery in Heal's Department Store, where several of her still life flower paintings were displayed. 'Woman' magazine commissioned her to paint covers shortly after, and at the end of the 1940s, she moved to a complex of studios, Durham Wharf, on the Thames at Chiswick, where she lived and worked until her death. Fedden married the artist Julian Trevelyan in 1951, having met before the war, and they travelled to Europe, Africa, India, Russia and America together. Since then she has continued painting, and the Redfern Gallery, New Grafton Gallery and many others throughout the country exhibit her work. In 1951 she painted murals for the Festival of Britain Television pavilion and later began teaching painting at the Royal College of Art. She was elected to the Royal Academy in 1992 and since the mid-1930s has been a member of the Royal West of England Academy at Bristol, where she was president between 1984 and 1988. Fedden's work is in the collection of Yale Centre for British Art (Pritzker Gift). A monograph on Fedden was published in 2014 by Lund Humphries and written by Christopher Andreae.

NYC Watercolor Drawing American Modern 20th Century Modernism Mid-Century WPA
By David Fredenthal
Located in New York, NY
NYC Watercolor Drawing American Modern 20th Century Modernism Mid-Century WPA. David Fredenthal (1914-1958) "View of New York from New Jersey,"7 x 10 inches. Watercolor on Paper, c. 1948. Signed lower right. David Fredenthal (1914 - 1958) was one ot America's most respected watercolor artists. He was famous for his bold, intensely vigorous and complex paintings and drawings that expressed his deep feeling for excitement with life and living. He was a draftsman with seemingly a special gift for catching anything, physically and emotionally on the spot, and he never went anywhere without three or four loaded pens and a sketchbook in his pocket. As part of the WPA project he executed a number of murals including the Sports Pavilion on the Heinz Building of the New York World's Fair 1939. Some of his fresco and mural techniques were inspired by his friendship with Diego Rivera who had admired and encouraged him in the early 1930's. After he won a traveling scholarship to Europe from The Museum of Modern Art at age 19, he was the recipient of two Guggenheim grants in Painting. He had his first solo exhibition at the Downtown Gallery in New York in 1937 at age 23, and many others after that including the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1947. Because of Fredenthal's prodigious drawing gifts, he was chosen by Erskine Caldwell to illustrate his novel "Tobacco Road...

Large American Modernist Watercolor Painting Leeks Bernard Chaet Expressionist
By Bernard Chaet
Located in Surfside, FL
Hand signed and dated leeks on a kitchen table 31.5 X 39.5 framed. 21 X 28.5 sheet without frame. Bernard Chaet (born 1924, Boston, MA - 2012) was an American artist; Chaet is known for his colorful, dynamic modernist paintings and masterful draftsmanship, his association with the Boston Expressionists, and his 40-year career as a Professor of Painting at Yale University. His works also include watercolors and prints. In 1994, he was named a National Academician by the National Academy of Design. Chaet was instrumental in transforming Yale’s traditional art program into one with a more modernist approach that gained national prominence. Chaet melded landscape and abstraction in a traditional established by Vincent Van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Edvard Munch, Piet Mondrian, and Ferdinand Hodler. His own tenure began in 1951 at Yale, where he worked closely with Josef Albers to revamp Yale’s art program. Between 1959 and 1962 he was the chair of what was then called the Yale Department of Art of the School of Fine Arts — prior to becoming one of the independent professional schools at Yale in 1973. Chaet taught painting and drawing and mentored generations of emerging talents. Chaet was the author of the 1970 textbook “The Art of Drawing” and “An Artist’s Notebook 1979,” both of which have since been reissued several times. In the latter book, alongside examples of work by his favorite artists, are student drawings by Yale graduates such as Robert Birmelin, Michael Mazur and Eugene Baguskas. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1924, Chaet studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and then earned a B.A. at Tufts University. Known for his expressionist landscapes and still lifes, Chaet’s work has continuously been shown in galleries in his native Boston, in New York City, and around the country. In 2010, a retrospective of his seascapes was featured at the Cape Ann Historical Society in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he had a home and a summer studio in nearby Rockport. His has also exhibited at David Findlay Gallery in New York and at Swarthmore College. Many of Chaet’s students went on to notable art careers, including Janet Fish, Chuck Close, and Richard Serra. His work is represented in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, CT, and the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, MA. Chaet is the recipient of many awards including: the National Foundation of the Arts and Humanities, Sabbatical Grant in 1967-68, the National Academy of Fine Arts, Benjamin Altman Award in Painting in 1997, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Jimmy Ernst Prize in 2001. Chaet was born and raised in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, MA. He completed a dual program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston—studying painting with Karl Zerbe—and Tufts University, graduating with a B.S. in 1949. Chaet is known for his association as a first generation Boston Expressionist. (along with Hyman Bloom and Jack Levine) Chaet was a contributing editor to Arts Magazine. In 1960 he published the book Artists At Work, which features in depths conversations with artists Pat Adams, Anni Albers, Josef Albers, Al Blaustein, Hyman Bloom, James Brooks, Robert Engman...

The black horse, a charming and rustic work by the great Mary Fedden
By Mary Fedden
Located in Petworth, West Sussex
Mary Fedden OBE RA RWA (British, 1915 -2012) The black horse Gouache on paper Signed and dated ‘Fedden 1986’ (lower right) 5.5/8 x 7.7/8 in. (14.3 x 20 cm.) Mary Fedden is viewed as a highly important figure to British 20th-century art history. She is one of Britain’s best loved and most collectible artists. Her paintings can be found in many private art collections including HM The Queen for Windsor Castle, Prince Hassan of Jordan, the Tate Gallery, Bristol City Art Gallery and The Royal Academy. This beautiful example of Fedden’s work highlights the rustic charm and simplicity that Fedden is so brilliant at conveying. With only a few elements to her composition and with a limited colour palette she manages to create a bold and intriguing image that stands out in its own right. Mary Fedden studied at the Slade from 1932 – 1936. She returned to Bristol where she painted and taught until World War II. After the war was over Fedden developed her own style, reminiscent of Matisse and Braque. In 1951 Mary Fedden married Julian Trevelyan. In 1956 she became a member of the London Group and the chair person...
