Minnie Pwerle was born in the Utopia region in 1915. Her traditional country is Atnwengerrp and her languages were Alyawarre and Anmatyerre. Pwerle began painting with the modern medium of acrylic paint on canvas in 1999, at around the age of 80 and found instant success after her first exhibition in Melbourne in the same year. Following a show at the AMP building in Sydney with her daughter Barbara Weir during the Sydney Olympics in 2000, her fame grew. Her incredible artistic talent and original design procured an enthusiastic national and international following of art lovers, collectors and critics alike. In the years after she took up painting in 1999 until she died in 2006, Pwerle was exhibited in many prestigious galleries in Australia and New Zealand and her work is now in the collections of many discerning and knowledgeable private collectors, as well as significant art institutions including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Queensland Art Gallery.
