Very rare and unique articulating 3" panda bear pendant necklace with original silver tone snake chain by Napier, circa 1960. This highly collectible piece is an excellent example of Mid-Century Modern design, signed Napier on pendant verso and chain and accented with crystals for the panda's eyes. The silver and gunmetal tone body is texturized which provides an attractive sheen flickering delightfully against light sources. Founded in 1875 Massachusetts as Whitney and Rice, originally specializing in silver products, the company later became Carpenter and Bliss, then changing again to E.A. Bliss Company. Jewelry production was suspended during the first World War shifting to medals and medallions production. After the war the company shifted focus back on producing jewelry and James H. Napier became the company’s president, renaming it to the Napier Bliss Company then in 1922 changing again to The Napier Company. James Napier continued as head of the company until 1960. During James Napier's years at the helm, the designs were greatly influenced by European and Paris fashions due to his visits abroad. In the 1920s and 1930s many Napier pieces featured Egyptian inspired themes with symbols such as scarabs, cobras, King Tut, and Osiris and Isis. The company became highly successful and Napier jewelry was worn by movie stars, such as Lana Turner and Sonja Henie...
