Uncommon large planter, no cracks, no drilled holes. Retains paper label.  Otagiri is a name many collectors recognize. "Otagiri" is actually a trademark. The company name is Otagiri Mercantile Company, Inc. or OMC. (Otagiri, the company, and OMC are used interchangeably in the following information.) The company was an importer and a distributor of porcelain, stoneware, and giftware in the San Francisco area for more than 46 years. The products were made in Japan and were imported for distribution and sold to high end department stores and gift shops. Otagiri products were handcrafted and hand-painted.     No, Otagiri is not still in business. In 1994, the company Enesco bought out Otagiri, which was founded in 1954.     To identify an Otagiri, examine the bottom of the piece. For some items, the Otagiri name is painted directly on them in Japanese characters. You can find images of these markings published on trusted online resources to compare what appears on your piece. In addition, Otagiri wares may feature a diamond-shaped gold foil sticker that reads "OMC Japan." Unfortunately, these labels may have come off of some pieces over the years.
