Early 20th Century Mission San Juan Capistrano - Figurative Landscape
By Warren E. Rollins
Located in Soquel, CA
Stunning figurative landscape of the Mission San Juan Capistrano by Warren Eliphalet Rollins (American, 1861-1962). Presented in a giltwood frame. "Capistrano" lower right, unsigned. This is a study for a larger painting of the same scene. Image size, 14.5"H x 21"W. For many years Warren Eliphalet Rollins was known as the "Dean of the Santa Fe art colony." He was the first artist to have a formal exhibition there; it was held in 1906 in the old Palace of the Governors. He was a close friend of Carlos Vierra, Gerald Cassidy, Kenneth Chapman, Sheldon Parsons and most of the other famous artists who assembled in the New Mexican capital during the first half of this century. Born in Carson City, Nevada, Rollins was raised in California and attended the San Francisco School of Design where he studied under Virgil Williams. At the completion of his studies, he was awarded the Avery Gold Medal and made Assistant Director of the school. Following his marriage in 1887, he and his wife settled in San Diego, and it was during this period that Rollins became interested in the Indian as subject matter. In search of material, Rollins, his wife, and their two daughters, Ramona and Ruth, traveled through every Western state from the Mexican to the Canadian borders. While in Montana, Rollins painted a portrait of Calamity Jane...

Lilac flowers at the door, 1901 uplifting floral still life large oil on canvas
Located in Norwich, GB
Here is a painting that will lift you - one feels happy every time one looks at it. It is such a lovely, unusual twist to the theme of the floral still life: here we have flowers, not in a vase, but attached to a wooden front door. I wonder if the artist did this with actual flowers, perhaps for a sweetheart, and then decided to paint the scene? At any rate: who wouldn't want to come home to find a large bunch of glorious lilac as they come home? The artist is Emile Baudoux (1850 -1929), who studied with Humbert and Cabanel. Paris-born, he liked to work in Normandy, where he had his studio. He exhibited his work at the "Salon des Artistes Français" until 1927, where he obtained a gold medal in 1910. The important oil on canvas presented here, dating from 1901, may have been shown at the Salon, as it bears an exhibition number "30" at the upper right of the canvas. It is signed and dated at the lower left as seen in the photos. Measuring 81 x 60 cm, the overall size including its original large oak frame...

Significant landscape painting of Taos, New Mexico river and buttes by Walter Alexander Bailey (American, 1894-1989). Rendered in saturated colors, a lone tree stands at the edge of a river. The river flows back into the distance, guiding the viewer's eye to a lush green plain. At the edges of the plain, large mesas rise from all sides in purple and red. Signed lower right corner. Unframed. Image size: 24"H x 30"W. Bailey studied at the Kansas City Art Institute with Thomas Hart Benton and Charles Wilimovsky. In the 1940s he worked as a scenic and motion picture artist in Hollywood. In 1927 to 1929, he taught a Master Class in Taos, New Mexico, and in 1932-1934 he taught a Master Class in landscape painting at the Kansas City Art Institute. Born Wallula, Oct. 17, 1894, Walter Bailey was a painter, illustrator, muralist, etcher, block printer, lithographer and teacher. He studied at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1920 with Charles A.
