Pam Hawkes Art

British

Pam Hawkes was born in Birmingham in England and still lives in the Midlands. She creates art with a mix of modern and medieval touch. It is personal and yet it has a challenging epic quality. And although the subject may be sensual, the depicted models often radiate a cool detachment. This contradiction is special about the work of Hawkes. Hawkesis one of the most popular artists. In her exhibition, the “Grenzeless” in the Netherlands, combinations that are reminiscent of Byzantine religious icons with centuries of painting were shown. The golden sacred art of 1000 years ago was always an inspiration for Pam, which makes it unusual for contemporary painters. She explains, “The craftsmen who painted these statues were not allowed to deviate from the visual language prescribed by the church. And yet these icons seem to take on, regardless of the persona the spectator or worshiper needs. My work costs a lot of this”. Hawkes came to her unique style called ‘modern gothic’ through decades of hard work and study. She started at the classical art academy, with an emphasis on art for 11 years, before going to work in the famous jewelry district of Birmingham. But then life intervened and it was not until her thirties that Hawkes had the opportunity to revisit her talent. Shortly thereafter she took a MA from the University of Central England and she began giving lectures about drawing art and life at schools and universities in the region. She admits that she does not always practice what she learns. Hawkes knows the value of preparation but often ignores it in her approach to painting. “I oppose all that I have learned and learned. I rarely do research or preparatory drawings. I immediately go on with a half idea and work it out while I continue.”, she says. Pam's free-wheeling approach results in several spectacular original ideas. And they certainly do not look unformed or unfinished. Pam's paintings are always beautifully composed, even if they are strange in what they portray. The echo of those Byzantine icons is visible here. The golden color scheme, the classic posed subject and the unusual frame. Her painting Spring is a wedding portrait with a special framework and a Halo of bees which is a perfect example of this. Hawkes herself says, “The characters in my paintings do not easily give away their stories. It is a seductive world they refer to, a place of myth and mystery. They invite us on a certain level to speculate about the idealized memories of their lives and give a second thought to the half-forgotten fables that we all collect and carry through our world.”

Zumbi dos Palmares
By Mark Steven Greenfield

Halo presents an amazing cast of historical black figures, most of whom were legendary and mythic characters in their time, but have been nearly lost to the vagaries and biases of history as seen through a white lens. With Halo, Greenfield brings the stories of Black folk-saints, martyrs, freedom-fighters, survivors, magicians, and visionaries back into view. Many of the figures are from the 1400-1800s, a timeframe that corresponds with Europeans beginning to use racial distinction as a tool to justify slavery. Greenfield honors their simultaneously disturbing and astounding lives by bestowing them with halos, traditionally seen as reverential symbols of adoration and respect. “I am reimagining what a saint is,” Greenfield says. “Maybe in studying their stories, they can inform us on better ways to live.” Thought to have been a descendent of central African royalty...

Blue (Sepia Toned Figurative Oil Painting of Boys on Bikes with Blue Ball)
By Carl Grauer
Located in Hudson, NY
Blue (Sepia Toned Figurative Oil Painting of Boys on Bikes with Blue Ball) Contemporary figurative painting based on a 1960's photograph, plays deeply on feelings of nostalgia and identity. oil on wood panel 20 x 20 x 2 inches Carl Grauer’s 'Blue' plays with the tension between memories, the “return to home”, and the actual experienced past through the renderings of the family unit. Inspired by images on found slides or old family photos, Grauer provokes mixed responses of delight and sadness, reminding us that unlike space, time cannot be returned. Grauer paints 'Blue' in black and white, sepia tones, and blue oil paint on wood to capture the nostalgia of a vintage 1950's photograph. Two young children ride bicycles in a charming landscape while one child holds a big blue ball. The blue ball beautifully contrasts with the sepia toned landscape. The brushstrokes are smooth, with little texture built upon the surface. About the work: Recollections, a series that plays with the tension between memories, the “return to home”, and the actual experienced past, is an idea that I explore through the renderings of the family unit. Nostalgia comes from the Greek word nostos, meaning “to return to home” and algos, meaning “pain”. Before the rise of pathological anatomy and bacteriology made it less credible, medically; nostalgia was considered a “disorder of the imagination. Through time, nostalgia’s meaning became a more generalized reaction to the sad fact that, unlike space, time cannot be returned. I initially began with source imagery of found slides and photos of people I find at flea markets, second hand stores or from my own family’s collection. I take the source imagery and change elements to signify specific moments that could be seen as memories that are remembered or forgotten. I aim to represent nostalgic scenes that may relay a tension, sorrow or humor that could be constructed memories or actual experienced events. The exact narrative may be forgotten or unknown, but the complex projection of an idealized story that I find intriguing may serve to reflect a feeling or memory for another person.
