French marine painting oil 20th century Bay Kersaint Brittany Finistere France
By Paul Pascal
Located in PARIS, FR
Paul PASCAL Melun, 1867 - Paris, 1945 Oil on panel 24 x 33 cm (30 x 39 cm with the frame) Signed lower left "P. Pascal" Provenance: artist's studio (sale on March 7, 1946 in Drouot ), Parisian private collection Paul Pascal studied with Albert Maignan. He was a painter of genre, animated landscapes as well as seascapes. He painted Finistère and Cornouaille (Douarnenez, Concarneau, Pont-Aven, Morgat, Sainte-Anne-La-Palud…). He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1894 to 1939. Our painting is a view of Kersaint beach near Landunvez. A couple is standing in the foreground, a man seated and a woman seen from behind. They seem to be resting before returning home, after a day collecting seaweed. Kersaint is the land of Abers and "the coast of legends". It is said that Saint Haude, sister of Saint Tanguy, has been buried in Landunvez, and that her tomb is in great veneration there. This region was rich by sea fertilizers. In the 19th century, more than 2,000 cubic meters of kelp were harvested there every year. Maurice Guillemot in his book "Villégiatures d'artistes" talked about Kersaint in 1897: “It is further than Brest, there at the end of France, an unknown village...

Notre Dame de Paris II
By Lucien Génin
Located in London, GB
'Notre Dame de Paris II', gouache on paper, by Lucien Génin (circa 1930s). One of two paintings of Notre Dame by this artist held by our gallery, it is also an absolutely charming and now, historic depiction from the 1930s, of the most famous cathedral in France. This version uses more exaggerated brushstrokes with strong colours attesting to its expressionist roots. Notre Dame is one of the most widely recognised symbols of the city of Paris and the French nation. As the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris, Notre-Dame contains the cathedra of the Archbishop of Paris. Approximately 12 million people visit Notre-Dame annually, making it the most visited monument in the city. While undergoing renovation and restoration, the roof of Notre-Dame caught fire on the evening of 15 April 2019. Burning for around 15 hours, the cathedral sustained serious damage. The government of France hopes the reconstruction can be completed by Spring 2024, in time for the opening of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Unlike the actual cathedral, this artwork is in good condition, is newly framed and glazed and signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner. Upon request a video may be provided. About the Artist: After the devastation of the First World War, Lucien Génin (1894 - 1953) left his provincial home in the autumn of 1919 to find his fortune among the lively Parisians in the heart of Montmartre. Génin befriended the painters Frank Will, Gen Paul, Émile Boyer, Marcel Leprin...

At the Yacht Club
By Edward Cucuel
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Artist Edward Cucuel and his wife Clara Lotte von Marcard spent their first two decades together in Germany, mostly in a villa on Lake Ammersee in Holzhausen near Munich. It is the works created in this period, mainly outdoor scenes of young women in fashionable attire of the day, that are most collected and appreciated among his works. It’s easy to see why- they capture an elegance and sense of calm and easy leisure- of long days in gardens or by the water.  This is one of those captured moments with a well-dressed woman watching the sailing yacht...

Place Pigalle
By Lucien Génin
Located in London, GB
'Place Pigalle', oil and gouache on art paper, by Lucien Génin (circa 1930s). Pigalle is well known to tourists who want to experience "Paris by night". It is home to some of Paris' most famous cabarets such as the Moulin Rouge which was immortalised by artist Toulouse-Lautrec. Lautrec's studio was here as was Picasso's, Vincent Van Gogh's and that of Andre Breton. In 1928 Josephine Baker opened her first nightclub next door to Breton's apartment. It is certainly a historical landmark of Paris and well known to so many visitors of this beautiful city. Génin painted Paris and Parisians and this is another one of his charming works among many held by this gallery. Please feel free to peruse them all on this platform. In good overall condition. Newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. Upon request a video may be provided.
