Paul Rafferty Art

English, b. 1965

Paul Rafferty was born in 1965 in Oxford, England. Rafferty is self-taught but with much support and encouragement from professional artists throughout his career, he primarily paints on location in oil. The influence from the 19th and 20th-century masters is evident in Rafferty's work, along with several contemporary painters working today. Every painting is about the light and its play on the subjects he depicts. Having lived in California and the South of France, Rafferty's work is infused with an abundant source of light, each location being a staging point from where he can travel through Europe or the United States and gather material to express his vision. Studio work plays a major role in his output allowing for a much larger, more considered approach to the subjects gathered in the field. As an artist member of the American Society of Marine Artists and Oil Painters of America, Rafferty strives to communicate his view on both color and brush stroke. Residing between properties in Mougin, in the south of France, and America, Paul's work displays the influence of both landscapes and cultures.

Cherry Blossom Dream, Original Tree Art, Skyscape Painting, Springtime Painting
Located in Deddington, GB
Cherry Blossom Dream by Sophia Chalklen is an original painting. One day I was sat looking up at a cherry blossom tree and thought how beautiful it looked from that angle. I took a photo and had to paint it. The beautiful light breaking through made it even more beautiful. I have used various metallic pink leaf as well as 24ct gold leaf on the trunk to create that extra sparkle and magic as the light hits the painting. Due to the nature of the metallic leaf it looks different in different light. Contemporary artist Sophia Chalklen sold online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. A Walk along the River
By Marion Buricatu
Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary: I’ve always wanted to paint a series on La Fleche, and it is happening… slowly. I love the very particular, soft lighting that seems so characteristic of the Loire Valley. Then, as I was looking through some pictures, this photo caught my painting teacher’s eye. She said, “I can’t wait to see what you’re going to do with this one!” This painting has three “fun” things about it. First, it is painted over a bright orange base coat like the two others in the series. Second, painting complementary colors over one another (the blue of the water over the orange base) normally results in something very similar to… mud. I had to be very careful! Third, this may not sound fun but I love painting grass and foliage - I use a technique where you hold the paintbrush at its tip, and just turn it around and around so the brushstrokes are almost touching. Do you have pictures saved where you always wonder, “what would that look like as a painting?” Or, “how would an artist or painter interpret my vacation picture?” You never know if they’ll start by painting the canvas orange! Words that describe this piece: France, river, flower, water, reflection, walk, Artist Biography: Life is basically a huge collection of moments. Sometimes you have no idea how everything will end up tying together - Marion Buricatu...
