Peter Harrison Sculptures
Peter Harrison is a woodworker, designer and machinist extraordinaire. He has developed his own style of modern industrial furniture design, breaking free from traditional expectations. His furniture made from wood, concrete and steel is as eye-catching as it is functional, including dining tables with two to 20 legs and steel rods and cables used as visual elements.
In 1996, Harrison graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in woodworking and furniture design. Upon graduating, Harrison began working as an independent furniture maker and designer. From his studio outside Saratoga Springs, New York, he produces furniture that celebrates and highlights the qualities of each material, whether glass, aluminum or solid-colored lacquer.
“It is rare that I build a table with four legs,” he has said. It is also rare that a design does not contain one element of open construction, like an exposed fastener or screw head. Each adds to the composition of materials and allows a brief insight into the structure’s design without revealing all of its secrets.
Apart from his studio, Harrison worked briefly as a workshop instructor at the Penland School of Craft in Mitchell County, North Carolina, and Peters Valley School of Craft in Sandyston, New Jersey. His work has been featured in furniture magazines including Home & Design, Furniture Style and Interior Design. Peter signs all of his furniture along with the date it was constructed.
