A charming French Impressionist marine painting by Louis Cazals (born 1912), dated 1958 and benefiting from Christie's provenance.
Executed in oil on panel, this intimate work demonstrates Cazals' distinctive ability to capture a landscape with remarkable economy and spontaneity. His paintings were frequently executed rapidly, using loose, abbreviated brushwork to convey light, atmosphere and movement rather than precise detail—an approach often compared with the work of Albert Marquet.
Marine subjects, harbours, canals and waterfronts became an important part of Cazals' oeuvre. His extensive travels took him throughout France and across Europe and North Africa, painting subjects ranging from the quays of Paris and canals of Amsterdam to the ports of Rotterdam, Honfleur and Concarneau.
The work is signed and dated '58 at the lower right. Measuring only 4 × 7 inches, it is a particularly appealing small-format example of Cazals' work, retaining the immediacy and freshness associated with paintings made directly in response to a landscape.
The reverse bears a Christie's stamp, providing documented auction-house provenance and adding further interest for collectors.
