Pierre Carrier-Belleuse Art

French, 1851-1932
Pierre Carrier-Belleuse was one of four artists born to Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887), a thriving sculptor. Pierre studied at the l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, under Alexandre Cabanel (1824-1881) and Pierre Victor Galland (1822-1892). The influence of their soft palates and classical style can be seen in the present lot. He exhibited in the Salon de Paris from 1875, receiving an honorable mention in 1887 and a silver medal at the Universalle Exposition in 1889. He flourished in his depictions of Ballerinas, where his favored medium of pastel allowed him to capture the movement of their dance. Carrier-Belleuse enjoyed working on a large scale. Between 1914 and 1916, Carrier-Belleuse and Auguste François-Marie Gorguet proposed, planned and co-created what was considered world's largest painting: Panthéon de la Guerre (45 ft. high and 402 ft. in circumference) containing almost 6,000 portraits, painted mostly from life.

Sheet 23 X 14 With some whimsical illustrations and a stencilled Mazel Tov text Nancy Chunn is an American artist (born 1941) based in New York, Known for her commitment to geopolitical issues, Chunn’s work includes a diverse range of paintings. Nancy Chunn was born in Los Angeles, California and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1969, from the California Institute of the Arts, Santa Clarita, California. She began her career in Southern California before moving to New York in the late 1970s, where she currently lives and works. Chunn has exhibited internationally and has been represented by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts in New York since 1985. Chunn currently teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York, and taught a master painting class at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles in 2007. Chunn’s paintings commonly expose the political arena and portray the power of the media to define and control public opinion. Her work is mostly painting focused on narrative, cultural references and social problems, history, and symbolism both in the global community. She often uses the news, and famously newspapers to draw inspiration and information, adding her own commentary to these sources. The work she produces is colorful, cartoonish, and laced with humorously dark commentary. A self-proclaimed “political junkie,” she achieved critical success with her early map like paintings of tyrannized nations and has continued her commitment to documenting world events and the repeating cycle of history in the paintings she has produced since the early 1980s. She is largely recognized for the yearlong Front Pages project, where she applied images and text to provide commentary on every cover page of The New York Times from January 1 to December 31, 1996. In 1997, Rizzoli produced a hardcover book illustrating each of the project’s works. Chunn was a 2009 Guggenheim Fellow. She was named Honoree of the fall 2007 Jennifer Howard Coleman Distinguished Lectureship and Residency at Otis College of Art and Design. In 2005, Chunn received an Anonymous Was A Woman Award. She has also twice received a Fellowship Award in Painting from the National Endowment for the Arts, namely in 1985 and 1995. "Couple on Bench at the Beach" is an original pastel drawing on paperboard by Francesco Spicuzza. The artist signed the piece in the lower left. This drawing depicts two figures sitting on a bench in front of a body of water. The artist used mostly pastel colors for this piece. 6 7/8" x 9 7/8" art 18 1/2" x 21 3/8" frame Francesco J. Spicuzza, born in Sicily on July 23, 1883, came to America at the age of 8. He supported himself as a fruit peddler until a newspaperman gave him $4 a week to go to school. He attended classes at the Milwaukee Art Students League, where he studied under Alexander Mueller. There he learned to paint in the then-fashionable "Munich School" technique, with detailed realism in heavy browns and grayed-out hues. Spicuzza completed eight grades in four years, and then in 1911, three businessmen advanced him enough money to allow him to study in New York under artist and teacher John Carlson. It was during this time that Spicuzza changed his style of painting, developing an impressionistic use of color, form and atmospheric renditions. After a period of grinding poverty, one of Spicuzza's pictures won a major New York competition. It was the first of 60 wins, both in the U.S. and Paris. He became a fashionable painter, and many of the leading collections have his work. Spicuzza's typical works were beach scenes, still life, landscapes and portraits done in pastels, oils, ink, charcoal and watercolors. Much of his work traced the history of Milwaukee in the early 1900s. He was probably best known for his scenes of women and children splashing in the waves...

Signed figurative pastel on canvas circa 1910 by French genre painter Pierre Carrier-Belleuse. The work depicts three ballerinas wearing white tutus, warming up in a studio. Carrier-Belleuse was a contemporary of Edgar Degas and they exhibited simultaneously at the major Salons in Paris. This classic example evokes the Belle Epoque period in french history and is superbly executed. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 29"x24" Unframed: 26"x21" Provenance: Private French collection Pierre Carrier-Belleuse studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Alexandre Cabanel and the interior decorative artist Pierre Victor Galland. He started out as an oil painter and produced genre compositions, such as his Final Rendezvous. From 1885, however, he opted to work exclusively in pastel, producing a large number of sketches and portraits but always remaining faithful to his earlier genre compositions. Examples include Pierrot, Harlequin, Woman with Cat. The periodical Figaro Illustré published a large number of his sketches of dancers, a recurrent theme throughout his work. From 1875, Pierre Carrier-Belleuse exhibited frequently at the Paris Salon, receiving an honourable mention in 1887 and being awarded a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889.
