Pietro Chiesa
Milano 1892 - Paris 1948
Pietro Chiesa served an apprenticeship in the studio of the furniture designer and interior decorator Giovan Battista Gianotti in Milan. In 1921 Pietro Chiesa opened Botega di Pietro Chiesa in Milan. In 1925 Pietro Chiesa showed work at the "Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes" in Paris.
In 1927 Pietro Chiesa joined Gio Ponti, Michele Marelli, Tomaso Buzzi, Emilio Lancia, and Paolo Venini to found Il Labirinto, which made high-quality furnishings in the Novecento style. Pietro Chiesa concentrated mainly on designing glass.
In 1933 Pietro Chiesa became artistic director of Fontana Arte, the firm founded by Gio Ponti and Luigi Fontana. Fontana Arte started out concentrating on furniture and glass but later became known for lighting. Pietro Chiesa treated glass like a valuable material, fragmenting pieces of it and using special cutting techniques. At the same time Pietro Chiesa created pure forms such as the 1932 glass table, made of a single bent band of clear glass. In 1933 Pietro Chiesa designed "Luminator", an elegant, flute-shaped floor lamp of lacquered brass tubing, which provided indirect light.
Pietro Chiesa was a leading exponent of Italian Art déco.

Italian Art Deco designer Pietro Chiesa was born in Milan in 1892 into a family of artists from Ticino, Switzerland. After his studies at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, he completed an apprenticeship at the studio of furniture designer Giovan Battista Giannotti; after gathering enough confidence and experience, Chiesa opened his studio in 1921 under the name of Bottega di Pietro Chiesa.
Known above all for his work as a glassmaker, Chiesa presented his work for the first time in 1925 at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. In 1932 his studio became part of Fontana Arte, the legendary Italian manufacturer of lighting and glass objects founded by Gio Ponti and Luigi Fontana. Chiesa becomes the artistic director of the company and over the years has designed numerous models for Fontana Arte, including lamps, windows, tables and artistic furnishing objects. The lamp is completely built up in metal, consisting of a stem that widens into a cone. The color can be best described as a very light grey, with a hint of blue. The finish is not smooth, but has a relief to it.

The Italian Art Deco designer Pietro Chiesa was born in Milan in 1892 in a family of artists originally from Ticino, Switzerland. After his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, he completed an apprenticeship at the studio of the furniture designer Giovan Battista Giannotti; having gathered enough security and experience, Chiesa opened his studio in 1921 under the name Bottega di Pietro Chiesa.
Known above all for his work as a glassmaker, Chiesa presented his work for the first time in 1925 at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. In 1932 his studio joined Fontana Arte, the legendary Italian manufacture of lighting and glass objects founded by Gio Ponti and Luigi Fontana. Chiesa becomes the company's artistic director, and over the years designs numerous models for Fontana Arte, including lamps, windows, tables, and artistic decorative objects.
