Rachel Hellmann Art

American, b. 1977
Rachel Hellmann is a contemporary American artist whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, sculpture, and installation. Best known for her geometric abstract paintings on shaped wood panels, Hellmann explores the relationships between color, light, architecture, and spatial perception. Her sculptural paintings extend beyond conventional rectangular formats, incorporating angular forms, layered planes, and carefully considered color relationships that challenge the boundaries between two- and three-dimensional art. Working primarily in acrylic on wood, Hellmann creates compositions that investigate geometry, depth, and the illusion of folded or overlapping surfaces. Her practice also includes paintings on paper, murals, and sewn mixed-media works incorporating fabric, yarn, thread, and translucent materials. Across these mediums, she maintains a consistent interest in geometric abstraction, materiality, and the interaction of color and form. Hellmann received her BFA from the University of Dayton and her MFA in Painting from Boston University. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo and two-person exhibitions at the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA; the University of Maine Museum of Art, Bangor, ME; the Rockwell Museum, Corning, NY; Elizabeth Houston Gallery, New York; Galleri Urbane, Dallas; and Saenger Galería, Mexico City. Her work is represented in numerous public and corporate collections, including the Addison Gallery of American Art, Rockwell Museum of Art, Zillman Art Museum, Boston Federal Reserve Bank, Fidelity, Morgan Stanley, and the U.S. Department of State's Art in Embassies Program. Hellmann is the recipient of the Blanche E. Colman Award for Painting and was named the 2015 Edward E. Elson Artist-in-Residence at the Addison Gallery of American Art. Additional artist residencies include the Corning Museum of Glass, Fundación Miró Mallorca, Ragdale Foundation, and Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts.

OYV-19 is part of Eric Mack's ongoing body of work utilizing multi-media, complex compositions, and a grid centered around urban design. Using a grid to create the framework of the painting, Mack has re-purposed an old Lenny Kravitz album cover as the structure of the piece. On the edges of the piece you can see a complex edge consisting of a faux leather album cover, nylon mesh, and torn paper. As imagery, Mack has chosen musical notes, tape measure, and other music composition elements through Zerox copy adhered by matte medium to the surface. Mack then creates his own color to further tweak and personalize the piece. Eric Mack (b.1976, Charleston) creates mathematically based renderings with a distinct post-modern twist. Works are informed with super imposed grids, patterns, and portals. Layered surfaces are created with paint, found objects, natural fibers, and synthetic substrates that explore the systems of our visual world. His most recent show “Charting the Terrain” is on view now at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles was covered by the Los Angeles Times, KCRW, and LALA Magazine. His last solo exhibition was titled "Impossible Architectures" at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2017. Recent group shows include "Abstract Mind" at the Czong Institute of Contemporary Art, South Korea, "Small Works 2017 at Trestle Gallery, Brooklyn, "Checkered History", Outpost Artist Resources, Brooklyn, N.Y. 2015; Collections include High Museum Atlanta, Ing Investments, Hartsfield Jackson International Airport - Atlanta + Atlanta Gas & Light Co. Brocade: The royal courts of the Maharajas of India were symbols of extravagance. The opulent Brocade or Zari textile was used lavishly to ornament the interiors. Brocade is a heavy weight drape, woven in intricate raised patterns of motifs or all over floral scrolls. What grants this fabric its royal stature is the use of gold and silver metal threads to weave the designs. These wall panels depict the rich affluent luxury of the Brocade. Gold corded thread embroidered on deep plush velvet creates raised patterns. The artwork is designed to exaggerate the opulence. A note on handmade: A handmade product is always appealing due to the irregularities in its workmanship. This is what sets it apart from machine made or computerized; the perfection they offer feels synthetic or artificial. Especially when one speaks of art and craft. These wall panels are works of hand worked embroideries. Imperfections such as an occasional puckering of the base material are expected with the kind of embroidery stitches used. You are assured these artworks are embroidered by highly skilled artisans (it is not possible for craftsmen of lesser experience to create these pieces) The materials used for the embroideries are of superior quality only. Jamavar The Jamavar of Kashmir is an exquisite heritage textile of India. The original Jamavar was a yard-long shawl of pashmina wool with delicate patterns handwoven in multicolored silk weft threads. Its authentic designs are finely intricate, imparting gentle aristocracy with its most outstanding and popular motif being the elongated teardrop, originally called 'buteh'. The 'buteh' is what one now recognizes as the 'paisley'. These artworks are compositions of the timeless 'buteh' of the Jamavar. The wall panels are embroidered with fine thread cords couched along the pattern. A note on handmade: A handmade product is always appealing due to the irregularities in its workmanship. This is what sets it apart from machine made or computerized; the perfection they offer feels synthetic or artificial. Especially when one speaks of art and craft.
