Richard Humphrey Art

American Landscape artist Richard Humphrey was born in Berkeley, California on December 21, 1951. The following year, he and his family moved to Los Angeles and then to Palos Verdes Estates in 1959, where he spent his childhood exploring the rural coastline of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. This early experience in nature helped form Humphrey’s passion for landscape painting and open space preservation.

Richard Humphrey attended Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, and upon graduation he began working in the Graphic and Design Department of The Aerospace Corporation where he eventually rose to the department’s top staff artist and designer. In 1985, through the influence of high school friend and fellow artist, Daniel W. Pinkham, Humphrey began the practice of plein air painting. He gleaned inspiration from the works of Russian Impressionist Issac Levitan and numerous American Impressionists, including Childe Hassam, Emil Carlsen, Guy Rose, and Edgar Payne. Additionally, Humphrey’s landscape paintings are influenced by the Hudson River School and its teachings of the relationship between the land and its beauty as a direct expression of a divine source and creative order. Humphrey is known for his rendered impressionist style, which is unique from the traditional loose plein air painting approach.

In 1997, Richard Humphrey organized the first of several exhibitions featuring work of the newly formed Portuguese Bend Artist Colony. Fellow members included local artists Stephen Mirich, Daniel W. Pinkham, Vicki Pinkham, Kevin Prince, Amy Sidrane, and Tom Redfield. The annual exhibitions spanned from 1997 to 2009 and raised significant funds and public awareness for the recently formed Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. The efforts resulted in a successful community support to preserve more than 1,700 acres of open space.

Humphrey’s work has been exhibited in the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, Bowers Museum of Santa Ana, Pasadena Museum of California Art, Carnegie Art Museum, the State Capital Building of Sacramento, Autry Museum of the American West, The Irvine Museum, Hilbert Museum of California Art, Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art, and Bennington Art Museum in Vermont. In 2007 he received the California Art Club’s Gold Medal for the Edgar Payne Award for Best Landscape at the 96th Annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibition held at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. Rick Humphrey’s paintings are in collections throughout the United States and Europe.

'Early Morning River Landscape, ' by Harry L. Hoffman, Oil on Canvas Painting

By Harry L. Hoffman

Located in Oklahoma City, OK

In this gilt wood framed oil on canvas waterscape, American Impressionist artist Harry Hoffman depicts the last moments of a morning sunrise over a river in predominant hues of lavender, purple, pink and blue. The sky is reflected in the water below with a sandy brown beach and large green tree in the foreground. Harry Leslie Hoffman was born in Cressona, a small community in Pennsylvania’s Schuylkill Valley. His mother was an amateur artist who encouraged her son to pursue a career in the arts. In 1893, Hoffman entered the School of Art at Yale University and studied with John Ferguson Weir, the son of Robert Walter Weir. After graduation in 1897, Hoffman moved to New York to continue his studies at the Art Students League. He also traveled to Paris and took classes at the Académie Julien. In the summer of 1902, Hoffman attended the Lyme Summer School of Art, in the town of Old Lyme on the Connecticut coast. The school was headed by Frank Vincent Dumond and was located in a boarding house owned by Florence Griswold. The school eventually grew into an artists’ colony and a center for American Impressionism. When Hoffman first arrived as a student, he was not permitted to stay in the house which was designated for the professional artists only. However, his outgoing personality soon won him many friends at the colony. In 1905, Hoffman settled in Old Lyme and worked as a full member of the artist colony. He was particularly influenced by Willard Leroy Metcalf, an Impressionist also working in Old Lyme. Fellow artists later fondly recalled Hoffman’s antics at the Griswold house, which included playing the flute and banjo, tap-dancing, singing humorous songs, and performing magic tricks. In 1910, Hoffman married another Old Lyme artist named Beatrice Pope, and the couple had one child in 1921. Hoffman and his wife often escaped New England during the harsh winter months. In the winters of 1914 and 1915 he traveled to Savannah, Georgia with fellow Old Lyme artist William Chadwick...

The Boat in Martigues, France

The Boat in Martigues, France

By Marie-Anne Nivoulies de Pierrefort

Located in London, GB

'The Boat in Martigues', oil on canvas, by Marie de Nivouliès de Pierrefort (circa 1910). Martigues is a small port town just northwest of Marseille in the South of France. Its nickname is the Provençal Venice. Further eastward down the coast is the town of Toulon where the artist was born in 1879. Nivouliès depicts a charming sailboat tied to the small pier yet with an unfurled sail. It looks to be a wondrous day along the Mediterranean, the kind we can always dream about. The painting is over one hundred years old and is in fair condition, yet recently brought back to life by an art restoration professional. Elegantly framed, it is stabilised now for decades into the future. Signed by the artist on the lower right corner. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request, a video may be provided of the artwork. About the Artist: Although she was a direct descendant of the counts of de Pierrefort, Marie de Nivouliès de Pierrefort's (1879-1968) family was very poor. In spite of the poverty, Pierrefort attended a Catholic school run by nuns, obtaining a scholarship from the School of Fine Arts of Paris. While still a student, she attended workshops of great Impressionist masters such as Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) and Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947). In 1910 she won a travel award from the school and traveled to Tunisia where she painted several Mediterranean landscapes. In 1938 the painter moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she painted the beautiful landscapes seen from her window. In Rio, Pierrefort had two individual exhibitions, both at the National Museum of Fine Arts, in the years 1946 and 1956. Although widowed in 1944, Pierrefort decided not to return to France until 1950. She remained there until 1959 when she definitively returned to Brazil. Her atelier in the neighbourhood of Glória was frequented by many emerging artists who learned the techniques of impressionism from her. Afterwards, Pierrefort painted for almost a decade in Brazil until she passed away in 1968 in Rio. After her death, many canvases were found in her studio but had been damaged or destroyed by humidity and by the intervention of her many cats. The painter Sergio Telles...
