Richard Tosczak Sculptures
Canadian, b. 1966
Richard Tosczak (b. 1966, Belgium) studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel. Tosczak’s bronze sculptures are marked by a dynamic formalism that is based on spontaneous pen and ink drawings.
“The figurative works of the last few years are overtly anonymous and convey an intense introspection. Even those figures, inspired by dynamic activities such as dance and contact improvisation, give the impression they are turning inward into themselves. I believe this reflects and parallels my personal experience and possibly my growth as an artist.” Richard Tosczak
Tosczak has exhibited in Canada, Brazil, Spain and France and was the only Canadian selected for the 2013 Figurative exhibition in Barcelona. His work is in corporate, private and public collections including the University of Alberta Collections, the City of Edmonton, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the University of Calgary.to

Spirit of Gravity - emotive, nude, female, figurative, bronze statuette
By Richard Tosczak
Located in Bloomfield, ON
In this thoughtful sculpture by Canadian artist Richard Tosczak, the gestures of a female figure, head bent, arms wrapped, are captured in bronze. Known for his beautiful figurative work, this piece retains the artist’s signature highly textured appearance and green-black patina. Tosczak’s pieces are first conceived on paper in quick pen and ink drawings. The spontaneity of this approach is evident in the almost abstract appearance of the sculpture. This piece is number three in an edition of eight.

Arethusa immerses herself in the Alpheus river - figurative, bronze statuette
By Richard Tosczak

He studied philosophy and modernist sculpture, working in steel, at the University of Alberta where a number of the professors had a strong affiliation with Sir Anthony Caro and Clement Greenberg. The Pleiades-Taygete 1/8 - emotive, nude, female, figurative, bronze statuette
By Richard Tosczak
Located in Bloomfield, ON
The elegant form of a nude female figure is captured in this sculpture by Canadian artist Richard Tosczak. This table-top piece is named after ‘Taygete’ one of the Pleiades--seven sister nature deities (nymphs) found in Greek mythology.
She stands, head bowed, arms clasped around her neck as if in deep thought. Known for his beautiful figurative work, this piece retains the artist’s signature highly textured appearance and rich earthy patina. Tosczak’s pieces are first conceived on paper in quick pen and ink drawings. The spontaneity of this approach is evident in the almost abstract appearance of the sculpture. Edition one of eight.
