Robert Reed Mixed Media
American, 1938-2015
ROBERT JAMES REED (1938-2014) earned his BFA (1960) and MFA (1962) at the Yale School of Art where in 1969 he became professor of painting and printmaking at Yale School of Art. He taught there until his death in 2014. As a student he assisted the influential Josef Albers in the technical production of color plates for Albers’s iconic work, Interaction of Color published in 1963. Reed became tenured in 1987, as the school’s first and only African American professor. In an interview, he said that he did not seek to distinguish himself through his racial identity but preferred to see himself as an artist who was African American. It is this self identification that could account for the fact that he is rarely grouped with other African American artists of his time like Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, David Driscoll and Faith Ringgold. Nonetheless, the symbols, colors and forms of his work draw upon his experience as a African American man.
He produced works that are largely grouped by decades. In the 1970’s he developed the Plum Nellie series, exploring the Interaction of Color in his own terms. The meaning of Plum Nelly is not clear, although it may mean ‘you’re nearly there’. In the 1980’s, the San Romano series Reed regarded the gorgeous Paulo Uccello’s 15th Century paintings of the Battle of San Romano between the Republics of Florence and Sienna. These three panels are rendered in newly developing Renaissance perspective, in saturated colors and complex compositions. Reed’s last group was produced in the 1990’s called Tree For Mine where is childhood home in Charlottesville VA is the source for his painterly investigations.

The art of Philip Wittmann is founded on signals. For him, signs serve as a bridge between abstraction, reality and writing, too. When he was 26 years old, he began painting as a hobbyist using 'pure' abstraction. However, he believed his work lacked a solid foundation upon which to grow.
He discovered a book on the origins of the Chinese alphabet, which origins are essentially signs, in 2008 while taking a calligraphy class. The 26 letters of our Latin alphabet are less pictorial than the Chinese characters as we know them now. He discovered that pictorial representation is more prevalent when examining the origins of alphabets—all alphabets, in fact—because there is frequently a similarity between the sign's true meaning and what it is meant to represent. For instance, the symbol for a turtle in the original Chinese script resembles a turtle.
Wittmann loves signs as they leave room for interpretation. For instance, if one writes “the sky
is blue”, one will make for themself a mental representation of a blue sky, even if each one-off us
will probably have some nuance in our own mental representation of that blue sky. On the other hand, a sign can...

The Bubble - Circular Contemporary Landscape/Abstract Painting, geometric, blue
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
Peña’s works range from painting to multimedia installations that question the ever-changing psychological landscape of America; asking the viewer to re-examine their perceptions of the “American Dream” and the affects that pursuit has on our environment.
In "The Buble", Peña takes a more traditional approach to representing a house in the phase of construction with bold and vivid colors and contrasts the image with cut Sintra board slowly pulsating downward from underneath the house. The light blue of the sky contrasts with a deep orange hue for the house. The work is framed with a 1 inch white border.
