Sergii Shaulis Art

Ukrainian, b. 1985

The stainless steel, aluminum and bronze sculptures made by Sergii Shaulis are thought-provoking and often melancholic. They ask the viewer to meditate on the self, dreams and the inner world of the mind. The modernist works — like those of Constantin Brancusi and Amedeo Modigliani — focus on the simplicity of shape and form. He frequently uses human forms with missing body parts, such as the head or the torso, to transform something visually macabre into a symbolic commentary.

Shaulis’s father, Olescandr — also a sculptor — dissuaded his son from taking up the family business, which provided political monuments and park sculptures for the Ukrainian government. Instead, Shaulis studied engineering physics for three years but left without completing his degree. He subsequently enrolled in the Fine Arts program at the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts.

After graduating, Shaulis teamed up with fellow sculptor Vasyl Semenyuk and created collaborative works, culminating in the development of a new form of casting technology. After his father died in 2003, Shaulis took the helm of his government commission workshop while continuing to create personal works. In 2007, he launched his series The Man Without a Rod; it features figures of men in utter despair, with many holding their heads in their hands. The sculptures are bodiless, having only arms, legs and heads.

Shaulis went on to produce his Maps of Identity series, an homage to his beloved Ukraine. His The Known Unknown series examines the past and present atrocities committed in his country. Several other groups of work speak to the fragility of the human condition and the inner prison of the mind. His sculptures are in private collections in Ukraine, England, Germany, Finland, Holland, Israel, Belgium, Australia and the United States.

"Fateful Flowers №2" Sculpture 17.5" x 12 "x 13" inch Ed. 1/1 by Sergii Shaulis 2020 Approximate weight 15 lbs Man. From the Fateful Flowers series: "I believe that flowers are like people. Flowers come in different colors, shapes, and sizes. Some extremely rare and some very common. They are all beautiful in their own unique way..." The goal of this project is to reflect the duality of the world. The artist tries to show the fine line between the terrible and the beautiful. The work is a result of observing the lives of people whose destinies were changed by chance. This is the story of an explosion preceded by another explosion until the situation becomes understood later. It is about the opportunity to see the beautiful and vice versa. Illusory freedom that you define for yourself, constrained by those restrictions. A person can never be 100 % sure about his life as the red roses can change their delicate velvet petals to the cold metal shine at one point. A flower is a metaphor for human growth and development. Freedom depends on the size of the pot, the boundaries of which are determined by the individual. Nowadays, when the whole planet is isolated due to the pandemic, we want to be free more than ever. In the modern world, thus, binding to a position (rooting) becomes obsolete. ABOUT ARTIST Born on 27 May 1985 in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Bronze Pine Cone 22-555 - nature inspired, still life, forged bronze sculpture
By Floyd Elzinga
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Canadian sculptor Floyd Elzinga finds inspiration for his iconic imagery in nature. From his studio on the rugged Niagara escarpment, he creates beautiful sculptures using natural forms—trees, the maple leaf and pine cones. This new series of pine cones are superbly detailed, and hand forged from bronze. The polished finish lends an elegance to these tabletop pieces. “The natural world is fundamentally my inspiration, and it is strongly reflected in my subject matter.” Floyd Elzinga His pinecone...

Catch me if you can!- 21st Century Dutch Bronze Sculpture of a Squirrel
By Frans van Straaten
Located in Nuenen, Noord Brabant
This squirrel is made by Dutch Artist Frans van Straaten. Van Straaten should be called an artist of balance always searching for harmony between force and movement in combination with space. Because of the wide range in his art-education he has mastered the art of drawing, painting and sculpting technology. However, the classical plastic art of sculpture and modelling opens up the possibility for him to create his own language of sculpture in answer to his urge for art. Due to this style of sculpting, the preference for bronze is natural. After his study of sculpture at the Academy of Art in Rotterdam (1988), Frans van Straaten creates bronze sculptures in which he unites force and movement. Feeling and Emotion converted into Matter Sculpture is an experience of space combined with the challenge of the three-dimensional. The tension of space and movement are the themes, which Frans expresses in his sculptures. Summary it can be said that the power of life and being, the feeling and emotion by force and movement will be converted into matter. The experience of space is being expressed in the shapes and characters in each of Frans’ sculptures. His sculptures of bulls express explosive power while the horses find their strength in being elegant. Each sculpture recalls this way their own association and serves as a metaphor for a certain emotion. Feelings, which has inspired the artist for each sculpture. Powerful and Elegant Looking at the works of this artist, it becomes very clear that one of his most important sources is his background in art history. The Renaissance period as well as several Italian artists served as inspiration to Frans as a sculpture. For instance the expressions in Leonardo da Vinci’s artworks, and also Giovanni Bologna...
