A Fine Matched Pair of Late 19th Century Thomas Webb and Sons Cameo Crystal Art Vases
The front panels with red and white etched scenes of birds and flowers.
Thomas Webb & Sons was an English glass company, founded in 1837 by Thomas Webb (1804-1869) near Stourbridge, England. The name T. Webb & Co. was adopted in 1842, and later became Thomas Webb & Sons. Webb operated the Platts glasshouse from 1837 to 1856 and then the Dennis glassworks from 1855 to 1990. [1]
The company, known originally as the “Crystal King of England,” was noted for the high quality of its Cameo glass. Cameo glass is created by a process of etching and carving through a layer of opaque white glass, leaving a white relief design on a darker colored glass body. Some pieces used two layers of etched glass to create a three-color Cameo glass product. In the 1870s John Northwood produced the first pieces, inspired by the Portland Vase. George Woodall would produce the most distinguished Webb Cameo...

Paris Exhibition Cameo Glass Vase by Thomas Webb
By Thomas Webb & Sons
Located in New Orleans, LA
A superb example of the cameo glass created by Thomas Webb & Sons for Tiffany & Co., this extraordinary vase was crafted especially for the Paris Universelle Exposition of 1889. Bearing the coveted "Gem Cameo" mark, it was made by the famed team of George and Thomas Woodall. While thousands of pieces of cameo glass were produced under the Woodall brothers’ guidance, only the most important examples bear the "Gem Cameo" acid-etched stamp; that this vase was also exhibited at one of history’s most important world’s fairs makes it a truly exceptional example from the period.
The vase displays two of the Woodalls' most important innovations in cameo glass. The first was their use of the cutting wheel, which allowed them to achieve greater detail and complexity in their designs. Second, the designers would lay a bluish tint over white glass, a technique that lent the design a greater range of shading and depth. This example, with its deeply hued cranberry background overlaid with a white floral motif, represents cameo glass at its very best.
The vase is pictured on page 24 of The Cameo Glass of Thomas and George Woodall, 2000, by C. Woodall Perry.
Stamped "Tiffany & Co. / Paris Exhibition...

Spectacular Thomas Webb Art Nouveau Rock Crystal Vase
By Thomas Webb & Sons
Located in Litchfield, CT
Circa 1900, by Thomas Webb, England. This stunning rock crystal vase by Thomas Webb is engraved in an exquisite Art Nouveau motif, showcasing profuse blossoms, twining vines, and draping boughs. At 13 1/2 inches tall, this is a large, rare, and one-of-a-kind example of Webb’s work. Beautiful filled with flowers or displayed as a dazzling accessory, this is the very definition of a luxe objet. Excellent condition.
Remark: “Webb is synonymous with perfection in the glass world."
Personal impression: "This vase is aesthetically gorgeous and technically a triumph, but being the child that I am, I love to hold it with the base cupped in my hand and rap it sharply with my knuckle. Like all superb glass, it rings, in this case like a finely tuned bell, deep and musical. To tell how good the glass is, you ring it strongly and the longer it sounds, the better the crystal. This vase rings...
