Alberta and Shepard Bryant, Alabama, documentary photograph, limited ed. c-print
By Timothy Hursley
Located in New York, NY
In this documentary-style C-print photograph, Timothy Hursley casts his gaze across the prosaic life of a couple in rural Alabama. Hursley's highly saturated color palette creates almost sickening stimulation in this otherwise every day scene. Through Hurlsey's photographic lens, the couple is fantastical in their squalor, and they redefine our sense of Americana. Timothy Hursley was born in 1955 in Detroit, Michigan, where he apprenticed in architectural photography with Hungarian photographer Balthazar Korab beginning in 1972. His apprenticeship continued until he moved to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1980, where he started his own studio, The Arkansas Office. From 1982 to 1987, Hursley made architectural photographs in New York of Andy Warhol’s last Factory on Madison Avenue at 34th Street. Eleven of Hursley's Factory photographs...

Bobbie's Buckeye Bar, Nevada, limited ed. Dye Transfer documentary photograph
By Timothy Hursley
Located in New York, NY
In this dye transfer photograph of a dilapidated bar in the American southwest, Timothy Hursley exercises his architectural eye and understanding of line to create an almost abstract composition from the skyline. The pale, sun-washed white and blue of the fence and buildings work to flatten any sense of depth, allowing these structures to play as design elements across the surface of the photograph. A roadside view of quotidian America, Timothy Hursley imbues the rundown with poeticism. Timothy Hursley was born in 1955 in Detroit, Michigan, where he apprenticed in architectural photography with Hungarian photographer Balthazar Korab beginning in 1972. Desert Doll House
By Timothy Hursley
Located in New York, NY
Timothy Hursley published Brothels of Nevada: Candid Views of America’s Legal Sex Industry in 2003. (Princeton Architectural Press). Throughout the years 1985 to 2003, Hursley photographed the architectural diversity of Nevada brothels from the grand convention centers to small mobile homes, both operational and abandoned. Although the brothels were often discounted as being unworthy of serious architectural consideration, Hursley poignantly photographed twenty-five of them. A noted detail of the photographs was the exclusion of people. “I sense the people,” Hursley explained, “the footprints of a subculture… a sort of coming together of the owners, the women and the customers, because [in] those rooms I see all three.” Timothy Joseph Hursley is best known as an architectural and art photographer. He learned the art of large-format photography as an apprentice (from age sixteen) to pioneering architectural photographer, Balthazar Korab. Hursley’s works have been exhibited in museums including The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. Timothy Hursley, Pocahontas, Arkansas, C-Print documentary photograph, 2016
By Timothy Hursley
Located in New York, NY
This color photograph is part of Tim Hursley’s recent series on the American South which embodies the artist's interest in the often untold stories of idiosyncratic places in offbeat, rural areas. The images were shot throughout the South, and this particular image was taken in a junk store in Pocahontas, Arkansas. After much haggling, the artist purchased this taxidermy, two-headed calf for his own collection. Timothy Joseph Hursley is best known as an architectural and art photographer. He learned the art of large-format photography as an apprentice (from age sixteen) to pioneering architectural photographer, Balthazar Korab...
