Tommaso Ottieri was born on February 8, 1971, in Naples. He studied architecture at the University of Naples and the Robert Gordon School of Architecture. After winning the Leonardo da Vinci scholarship in 1996, Ottieri moved to the Greek island of Santorini to work as an architect. During this time, he founded his first painting studio in the town of Oia. After returning to Naples in 1998, he obtained his master’s degree in executive planning and bio-architecture at the University of Federico II of Naples.
Shortly after receiving his degree, Ottieri devoted himself to painting full time. The study of architecture has undoubtedly shaped the style and subject matter of his paintings which is focused primarily on luminous urban landscapes at night and the interiors of opulent churches and theatres. He focuses on the color, light and movement found in the intense life of a city as it falls into the dark. His work is filled with a vivid, atmospheric and poetic quality. By using wax and oil as his medium, his paintings have a texture that fills them with the drama and motion seen in the places they depict. Since his first solo show in 2003, Ottieri has enjoyed international success as an artist exhibiting in the prestigious Venice Biennale and over 20 solo exhibitions and 40 group shows in museums and galleries all over the world. He currently lives and works between the Italian cities of Naples and Rome.
