Tsukioka Yoshitoshi Art
Japanese, 1839-1892
Born in Edo in 1839, Yoshitoshi became a student of noted woodblock artist Kuniyoshi in 1850, at the age of eleven. His first print, a triptych of a historical naval battle, was issued just three years later. After Kuniyoshi's death in 1861, Yoshitoshi earned his living designing prints of kabuki actors.
The 1860s were a time of increasing political unrest in Japan. A witness to the Battle of Ueno, a massacre of the shogun's supporters by imperial forces in 1868, Yoshitoshi's bloody battle prints during this period reflect the violence and upheaval of the time.
Yoshitoshi experienced some commercial success in the late 1860s, earning popularity designing prints for newspapers, but in 1871 he fell into a deep depression, living in poverty and unable to work. The year 1873 marked a rebirth for Yoshitoshi, as he emerged from his illness and began using a new go or artist name: Taiso, which means great resurrection. The following decades would see the production of his greatest work.
Considered his masterwork, Yoshitoshi's series One Hundred Aspects of the Moon was published from 1885-1892. These quiet and reflective prints, beautifully composed and drawn, feature subjects from traditional Japanese and Chinese history and legend, rendered with great sensitivity and emotion. Yoshitoshi's other important series from this period include New Forms of Thirty-six Ghosts and Thirty-two Aspects of Customs and Manners.
Sadly, Yoshitoshi's mental illness returned, and he was hospitalized in 1891. He continued to work intermittently, but died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1892 at the age of fifty-three.
Yoshitoshi was the most influential woodblock print artist of Meiji era Japan. His prints shimmer with energy and bring to life the tales of ancient Japan: the downfall of the once mighty, untouchable beauty, military conquests, and slices of everyday life. A consummate draftsman and imaginative designer, Yoshitoshi brought creativity, emotion, and elegance to images that continue to resonate with audiences today.to

Wogelmut was the teacher of Albrecht Durer and employed young Durer in many project of the last decade of the 15th century.
Michel Wolgemut Biography
Wolgemut trained with his father Valentin Wolgemut (who died in 1469 or 1470) and is thought to have been an assistant to Hans Pleydenwurff in Nuremberg. He worked with Gabriel Malesskircher in Munich early in 1471, leaving the city after unsuccessfully suing Malesskircher's daughter for breach of contract, claiming she had broken off their engagement. He then returned to his late father's workshop in Nuremberg, which his mother had maintained since Valentin's death.
In 1472 he married Pleydenwurff's widow and took over his workshop;[3] her son Wilhelm Pleydenwurff worked as an assistant, and from 1491 a partner, to Wolgemut. Some consider Wilhelm a finer artist than Wolgemut, however he died in January 1494, when he was probably still in his thirties. Wilhelm's oeuvre remains unclear, though works in various media have been attributed to him.

Two large and copiously illustrated books have woodcuts supplied by Wolgemut and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff; both were printed and published by Germany's largest publisher, the Nuremberger Anton Koberger, who was also Dürer's godfather. The first is the Schatzbehalter der wahren Reichthumer des Heils (1491); the other is the Historia mundi, by Schedel (1493), usually known as the Nuremberg Chronicle...

Vestiges of Edo in Tsukuda - Autumn

About Vestiges of Edo in Tsukuda (Tsukuda ni Nokoru Edo no Omokage)
Artist: URBANOWICZ Mateusz
Woodcarver: SEKIOKA Senrei III
Printer: ITO Tatsuya
Year: 2020
Our first original landscape ukiyo-e depicting Tsukuda, a neighborhood next to Tsukishima station in the east of Tokyo. This artwork highlights the striking contrast between the modern architecture and historical elements, that co-exist in harmony in Tsukuda today. The Japanese title Tsukuda ni Nokoru Edo no Omokage translates to “the vestiges of Edo in Tsukuda” - the word omokage (vestige) refers to the river, an aspect of old Edo that has continued to exist to this day, despite the fact that other things may have evolved or disappeared with time.
When we trace back the history of ukiyo-e, we can see that there have been many foreign ukiyo-e artists who created important shin-hanga works in the 20th century, such as Paul Jacoulet, Elizabeth Keith...

Jacob Steinhardt Woodcut Print "Rachel Weeping For Her Children" Signed Numbered
By Jacob Steinhardt
Located in Detroit, MI
“A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” This verse from Jeremiah 31:15 is the subject of this woodcut print by Jacob Steinhardt, depicting Rachel, who was the mother of the tribes of Joshua and Benjamin, and who was the wife of Jacob who was Israel, weeping for her children which is to be understood as after the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem, the Israelites were clustered into Ramah, the home of the Benjaminites, before being taken into the Babylonian captivity; Rachel is weeping for the destruction and expulsion of her descendants. This work is exemplary of the Jewish themes of Jacob Steinhardt, a German Jew...
