Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant, Second Edition, Two-Volume Set, 1892
By Ulysses S. Grant
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Grant, Ulysses S. Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. New York: Charles L. Webster and Co., 1892. Second edition. Two volume set. Octavo, period green cloth bindings, with new joints and a new archival slipcase. This second edition, two-volume set of Ulysses S. Grant’s Personal Memoirs was published in 1892 by Charles L. Webster and Company, New York. Volume I features a facsimile signature and dedication from Grant on the page adjacent to the copyright page. The inscription reads, “These volumes are dedicated to the American soldier and sailor..., New York City, May 23rd 1885.” This printing features engraved black and white illustrations, fold-out facsimile letters written by Grant, and forty-three maps. Grant’s Memoirs recount his childhood and personal history, his military career during the Mexican-American War, and his role in the American Civil War. Mark Twain is partially credited with encouraging Grant’s Memoirs, as he convinced Grant that the sale of books would be a significant source of income for his family after his death. Grant died in July of 1885 and Volume I was published, posthumously, later that same year. Grant’s Memoirs were originally sold door-to-door by former Union soldiers. The books became a common household staple. Grant’s family received 75% of the net royalties from the work and used the proceeds to re-establish their fortune. Twain wrote in his personal autobiography of 1924: “I had been comparing the [Grant] memoirs with Caesar's Commentaries… I placed the two books side by side on the same level.” Similarly, the book was applauded by individuals such as Gertrude Stein and Matthew...

Ulysses S. Grant - Autograph Letter Signed Directing Generals for the War's End
By Ulysses S. Grant
Located in New York, NY
GRANT, ULYSSES S. Autograph Letter Signed THE END OF THE CIVIL WAR: IN THE LAST WEEKS OF THE WAR, GRANT DIRECTS HIS GENERALS FOR THE FINAL PUSH ON RICHMOND AND PETERSBURG. By March, 1865, the Richard-Petersburg campaign was in its ninth month of operation and the Union forces were putting a stranglehold around General Lee’s vaunted Army of Northern Virginia. The Union army was getting reports from Confederate deserters detailing the desperate state of Lee’s army due to lack of food and supplies. It seemed only a matter of time before Lee would have to make a move: either try to flee with his army, or surrender to the Union forces. The Union forces were in control of the waterways surrounding the Confederate capital of Richmond and began to press their advantage. Norfolk and Ft. Monroe, VA were at the mouth of the James River to the southeast of Richmond, and White House, VA lay to the northwest along the South Fork Shenandoah River and by mid-March Grant was keenly concerned with gathering and organizing his troops along these strategic strongholds. On March 14, Grant sent orders for Colonel Sumner to “report by telegraph his arrival at Norfolk to Gen. Ord” and had ordered Major General Philip Sheridan...
