Walter F. MacGregor was a second-generation Scottish immigrant who grew up in Minnesota. After going to school at St. Cloud State and the University of Minnesota, he became an architect and teacher. Later, struggling to find work during the depression, MacGregor worked as a Civil Works Administration Engineer in St. Cloud and State Director of the works division of the CERA.

He attended school in the southwest suburbs before the family settled in Chicago. Young Henry enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts where Lawton Parker became his mentor.
