William Thornley also signed himself Charles Thornely, W A Thornbery, Thornberry, Thornbury and Thornery. He was undoubtedly a prolific artist as the number of his London exhibits shows , though his work is extremely popular especially in recent years. At his best his work is exceptionally fine and professional, as these delicate paintings would attest to. He showed his work at the Royal Academy, the British Institute, Suffolk Street Galleries and various other notable societies. Thornley lived mainly in London and Hastings between 1858 and 1898.
