William Grauer Art

American, 1896-1985
William C. Grauer (2 Dec. 1895-6 Apr. 1985) was a painter, muralist, and art teacher active in Cleveland for nearly 60 years. Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art in 1914 and saw service in France during World War I. Coming to Cleveland as a free-lance artist in 1927, he married Natalie Eynon (1888-1955), a fellow native Philadelphian and artist with whose career his own became intertwined. Invited to contribute murals to the President's Cottage at White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., in 1932, they returned to found and co-direct the Old White Art Colony, School and Gallery there during the summers from 1934-40. During the same period they also started the art department at Cleveland College of Western Reserve University. Grauer painted murals for the West Virginia exhibitions in both the Chicago Century of Progress (1933) and the New York World's Fair (1939). Residents of Ambleside Dr. near University Circle, the Grauers also maintained a summer home and studio in E. Claridon, Geauga County. They had 2 daughters, Blanche E. and Gretchen. Following the death of his wife, Grauer married another Cleveland College art instructor, Dorothy Turobinski, in 1964. He retired from WRU as associate professor of art in 1966 but continued to paint and to teach privately. Increasingly abstract in style in his later years, his work had been exhibited in 55 May Shows at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

After attending the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art, Grauer received a four year scholarship from the City of Philadelphia to pursue post graduate work. It was during this time that Grauer began working as a designer at the Decorative Stained Glass Co. in Philadelphia. Following his World War I service in France, Grauer moved to Akron, Ohio where he opened a studio in 1919 with his future brother-in-law, the architect George Evans Mitchell. Soon, the Rorimer-Brooks design company, the developer Van Swerngen brothers, as well as the Sterling Welch and Halle Bros. department stores realized the extent of Grauer's talent and eagerly employed him. Grauer’s work during this time included architectural renderings for Shaker Square, Moreland Courts, and other many other projects commissioned by Cleveland architects. Grauer also remained true to his roots as a master designer of stained glass windows. With his work in such high demand, Grauer received a commission in 1921 to paint murals for the French Grill...

Vintage Colorado Ghost Town Oil Painting by Harold Skene, Western Landscape

By Harold Vincent Skene

Located in Denver, CO

“Ghost Town” by Harold Skene (1883–1978) is a compelling vintage oil painting that evokes the quiet drama of Colorado’s mining past. This atmospheric Western landscape depicts a lone prospector and his pack mule standing among the weathered remnants of an abandoned mountain town. Set in late summer or early autumn, the scene is painted in a rich, earthy palette of golden yellows, sage greens, dusty pinks, and soft blues, capturing the stillness and solitude of the high desert West. Painted in oil on board, the work is signed by the artist at the lower right and titled and dated on the verso, underscoring its authenticity and historical value. Skene’s careful attention to structure and perspective reflects his architectural training, while his expressive handling of landscape conveys the emotional weight of a once-thriving community now reclaimed by nature. The painting measures 24 x 30 inches (image size) and is presented in a classic mahogany frame with overall dimensions of 30 x 35.5 x 2.75 inches, offering strong visual presence and immediate display appeal. A graduate of Harvard’s School of Architecture, Harold Skene studied at the Denver Art Academy and the Broadmoor Art Academy, and served as an assistant to noted Western artist Allen Tupper True...

The Boat in Martigues, France

The Boat in Martigues, France

By Marie-Anne Nivoulies de Pierrefort

Located in London, GB

'The Boat in Martigues', oil on canvas, by Marie de Nivouliès de Pierrefort (circa 1910). Martigues is a small port town just northwest of Marseille in the South of France. Its nickname is the Provençal Venice. Further eastward down the coast is the town of Toulon where the artist was born in 1879. Nivouliès depicts a charming sailboat tied to the small pier yet with an unfurled sail. It looks to be a wondrous day along the Mediterranean, the kind we can always dream about. The painting is over one hundred years old and is in fair condition, yet recently brought back to life by an art restoration professional. Elegantly framed, it is stabilised now for decades into the future. Signed by the artist on the lower right corner. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request, a video may be provided of the artwork. About the Artist: Although she was a direct descendant of the counts of de Pierrefort, Marie de Nivouliès de Pierrefort's (1879-1968) family was very poor. In spite of the poverty, Pierrefort attended a Catholic school run by nuns, obtaining a scholarship from the School of Fine Arts of Paris. While still a student, she attended workshops of great Impressionist masters such as Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) and Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947). In 1910 she won a travel award from the school and traveled to Tunisia where she painted several Mediterranean landscapes. In 1938 the painter moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she painted the beautiful landscapes seen from her window. In Rio, Pierrefort had two individual exhibitions, both at the National Museum of Fine Arts, in the years 1946 and 1956. Although widowed in 1944, Pierrefort decided not to return to France until 1950. She remained there until 1959 when she definitively returned to Brazil. Her atelier in the neighbourhood of Glória was frequented by many emerging artists who learned the techniques of impressionism from her. Afterwards, Pierrefort painted for almost a decade in Brazil until she passed away in 1968 in Rio. After her death, many canvases were found in her studio but had been damaged or destroyed by humidity and by the intervention of her many cats. The painter Sergio Telles...
