William Lee Hankey Paintings
British, 1869-1952
William Lee Hankey was born in Chester. He was married to Mabel Lee Hankey and then Edith Garner. He studied at Chester School of Art under Walter Schroeder, at the Royal College of Art and in Paris. From the early 1890s, Lee Hankey exhibited at the main London galleries, especially Fine Art Society, RWS, Leicester and Lefevre Galleries, also RA, Goupil and many others. During World War I, he served with the Artist’s Rifles. Lee Hankey is notable for his paintings of French harbor scenes and paintings and etchings of English country life. He won a gold medal at the Barcelona International Exhibition and a bronze medal in Chicago was a vice president of the RWS in the late 1940s and chairman of the Empire Art Council.

William Lee Hankey was born in Chester and after leaving school he worked as a designer while attending evening art classes at the Chester School of Art under Walter Schroeder. Lee-Hankey later studied at the Royal College of Art before becoming a renowned painter and print-maker.
From the early 1890s Lee Hankey exhibited at numerous and notable art galleries, which included the Leicester and Lefevre Galleries, the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters as well as the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers/Painter-Printmakers. In 1886 he became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, in 1909 an associate member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and a full member in 1911 in 1896 he became a member of the Royal Institute and was President of the London Sketch...

Pluie a Venice is painted in Hambourg's preferred palette of muted blue-green, grey, and gold with splashes of ruby red, deep blue, and emerald green. The soft colors work well for beach scenes and rainy days such as the ones portrayed in this painting. The impressionistic scene shows multiple pedestrians strolling down the boardwalk, shielding themselves from the rain with colorful umbrellas that provide pops of color and balance the overcast sky.
The background contains a three-masted ship and Piazza San Marco's famous bell tower and Basilica. Hambourg uses the minimum number of brushstrokes necessary to portray ships, seagulls, buildings and people as well as reflections on the glistening sidewalk. The brushstrokes in the sky have an interesting texture that is controlled yet carefree and there is heavy impasto throughout. His portrayal is both realistic and romanticized.
Hambourg was clearly influenced by the great Impressionist artists of earlier generations, perhaps none more than the one with a direct connection to his family. Hambourg's wife, Nicole Rachet, was born into a family with a large collection of works by Impressionist master Eugene Boudin. Rachet's grandfather was a contemporary and friend of Boudin's, and a collector of his work. In their later years, Hambourg and Rachet donated over 300 canvases by Boudin and other artists to the Eugene Boudin Museum in Honfleur, France. This painting has been in a private collection for around 30 years and was previously owned by the Fine Art Society. It is a beautiful study of a young peasant girl with her goats in a farm courtyard. The work is both sensitive and charming, he employs a lovely earthy palette and has a sketchy foreground and more detailed background.
