Wilson Henry Irvine Art
American, 1869-1936
Wilson Henry Irvine. From 1914 to 1917, the artist spent his summers painting at Old Lyme, Connecticut, where he became affiliated with the art colony there, and in 1918, he purchased a home on Sterling City Road in neighboring Hamburg. In 1926, he was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design.
In 1914, when he was 45, Irvine moved his family from Chicago to Old Lyme, Connecticut, and became part of the famed Florence Griswold circle, now recognized as the "American Barbizon," at the hub of American Impressionism. Irvine is best known for his mastery of light and texture — a 1998 exhibit of his work was called Wilson Henry Irvine and the Poetry of Light. To capture subtle effects of light, Irvine often painted en plein air, wearing his trademark cap, knickers, and goatee, with his easel and his paints set up in the field. He was noted for his renderings of hazy summer days, as exemplified by this painting.to

Following two decades of successful impressionistic landscape painting, Wilson Henry Irvine became known for a new experimental style in the 1930s. In 1930, Irvine began making prismatic paintings—landscapes and still-lifes rendered as though seen through a glass prism. The effect accentuated the play of light on the edges of objects. Irvine remained committed to this style of prismatic painting throughout the 1930s, winning the best-picture award in 1934 for a picture of a life-sized nude at the annual exhibition of the Lyme Art...

"El Salto" Evening Light
C. S. “Steve” Talley developed an art interest not long after graduating with a degree in astronomy/physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978. Juggling a career in the sciences and ultimately computer programming, his art skills continued to improve by taking workshops from primarily plein air artists. Talley’s style of impressionistic realism continues to evolve as he explores color from bold to tonalist. He takes artistic license to push a color or include a compositional element to accomplish his goal of creating the intangible “strong emotional content”. Beginning as a portrait painter he has evolved to become primarily a western landscape painter. He also enjoys painting astronomical and religious themes. His main influences come from Paul Strisik, Will Sparks...

"Lange's Mill from the Creek"
A native of Texas, Chuck Mauldin has been painting in oil since the age of twelve. His interest in watercolor and pencil drawing grew during his years spent in Louisiana. With his move back to Texas, he has renewed his focus on oil painting, using this medium in a realistic yet painterly style. Striving to quickly capture color and mood with a direct "alla prima" technique is one of his main objectives in painting outdoors on-location. Cows, cowboys and Native Americans often enrich the landscape in his studio work, while anything can inspire his plein air paintings.

A prolific Impressionist with a penchant for atmospheric scenes, Illinois native Wilson Irvine began his career in Chicago as an airbrush artist. His expertise led to his eventual employment with the newly founded Chicago Portrait Company, where he retouched photographs to achieve highly realistic results. It was not until 1895 that Irvine enrolled in evening classes at the Art Institute of Chicago, studying first with the academically trained Charles E. Boutwood and later with the illustrator Walter M. Clute. Beginning in 1900, Irvine’s landscape paintings appeared in forty-one exhibitions hosted by the Art Institute, and soon his work was seen at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery, and the National Academy of Design. Irvine was awarded a silver medal at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.
Also in 1895, Irvine and a group of fellow artists founded the Palette and Chisel Club of Chicago. Members met on Sunday mornings at the studio of noted sculptor Lorado Taft to draw from the model during daylight hours. Irvine served first as the treasurer and then as president of the club, regularly participating in the group’s exhibitions, which were held at the art galleries of Marshall Field’s eponymous department store. In 1907, Irvine was one of the founders of the Cliff Dwellers Club, spearheaded by noted author Hamlin Garland. He was also active in the Artists’ Guild, which merged into the Arts Club, and the Chicago Watercolor...
