WMF Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik Table Lamps

German

The fine brass, copper and silver metalware produced by distinguished manufacturer Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) has adorned the tabletops of restaurants, hotels and homes around the world. WMF is especially prized by collectors for its Art Nouveau works of the late 19th century and Art Deco pieces manufactured throughout the early 20th century.

WMF traces its beginnings to 1880 when the merger of Straub & Sohn and Ritter & Co. formed the public limited company Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik. The company initially focused on tableware and decorative pieces, such as vases and planters. In 1892, WMF introduced its patented “perfect hard silver plating,” a technology that distributes twice as much silver to the sections of cutlery that experience the most wear, allowing the whole piece to hold its luster longer than other silver-plated products.

In 1905, WMF acquired a majority holding of Orivit AG, a company in Cologne that manufactured products from a tin alloy, further expanding its range of materials. By 1910, its main facility in Geislingen, Germany, employed 4,000 workers. It had branches in Vienna, Warsaw and London, and printed a catalog in 12 languages.

As a German business, WMF experienced extensive asset loss in the aftermath of the world wars. However, by 1950, its main facility once again had a workforce of more than 3,000 employees, and its high-quality products returned to popularity. There was an increase in demand for its Cromargan cutlery as well as work by WMF’s preeminent lighting designer, Wilhelm Wagenfeld.

By the 1960s, WMF’s main facility had 5,800 employees. More factories were opened to keep up with demand. WMF is now one of the largest manufacturers of metalware in the world and continues to produce pieces of superb quality. The company has over 200 branches in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and owns branches in 40 other countries.

Art Deco Table Lamp "Ikora" by Paul Haustein for WMF, Model 110 / 216, Germany c
By Paul Haustein, WMF Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik
Located in Cork, IE
A silver-plated brass body, which was "fire-patinated" in a newly developed chemical process, makes this "Ikora" table lamp a true example of how technological innovation drove exceptional design in 1920s Germany! During the late 1920s WMF developed new techniques involving chemical reactions on precious metals and glass to produce its celebrated "Ikora" collection. By using a stopping-out method to create the pattern and adding Ammonia to blacken the brass during a high temperature firing process, a playful, yet geometric pattern was achieved, which gives this lamp a timeless Art Deco aesthetic. Originally designed in 1928 by Prof Paul Haustein as a decorative metal container with lid, WMF decided to also use this design for this table lamp with model number 110 / 216 The lamp is wired for two E27 light bulbs and the central column can be easily extended by up to 8 cm (3.1 in) by loosening and tightening a small handle next to the two light sockets. This allows for different light effects as well as mounting larger lamp shades...

Truly a collector's item, and colored in the most attractive "Tiffany-Green", this is probably the only Paul Haustein WMF Ikora table lamp model 251/169a on the market today - if not the only one! "Fire-patinated" in a newly developed chemical process, this "Ikora" table lamp is an outstanding example of how technological innovation drove exceptional design in 1920s Germany! Vintage WMF Red, Orange, White Black Glass and Chrome Sphere Table or Desk Lamp
By WMF Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik
Located in North Miami, FL
This stunning and artful Art Deco original vintage glass lamp is from the fine and noted German metal company of WMF whose span of decades of business has produced top line pieces in many mediums. It is red glass with swirls and veining of black set against the red sphere ball. It becomes a sea of orange red with hints of amber amoebas floating on and off when it is lite. It is an early one all with original but newly nickeled silver hardware. It has been fully rewired and restored for United States sockets and use. The bulb is on the inside and has the two part socket with the round turn off /on switch. When lite, the most amazing beautiful sculptural glow, color and forms take shape inside almost like sea creatures from the water. The glass portion alone is 12" H x 13" D. Sorry the photos do not do justice to show you the on presentation of gorgeous light and forms. This now just needs a great white drum shade. It is of the period of the 1930s but looks so modern. This is unusual, sculptural and artistic from the time period yet remains modern looking. It makes a great table or side lamp with sculptural internal forms when it is lite. This is a beauty. When it is on at night, the forms are amazing with great color of orange and reds floating amoeba like forms. It is also just beautiful just turned off. It does not seem Art Deco but very modern looking now. This is a sexy lamp...

Wmf Art Nouveau Lamp Night Light
By WMF Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik
Located in NANTES, FR
Art Nouveau night light around 1900. Silver metal and glass cabochons. Attributed to WMF. Electrified and in very good condition Width: 17 cm Height: 28 cm Depth: 14,5 cm Weight: 1,3 Kg WMF was originally called Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer. In 1880, Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer merged with another German company and took the name of Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, then WMF acquired the Polish metalworks Plewkiewicz of Warsaw in 1886, which became a subsidiary of WMF around 1900. In 1900, WMF acquired Albert Köhler, a famous Austrian ironwork company. Then, in 1905, WMF acquired Orivit, a company known for its Jugendstil (German equivalent of Art Nouveau) pewter fabrications, followed a year later by the purchase of Kunstgewerbliche Metallwarenfabrik Orion, another German metal fabrication company. . During World War I, the WMF was responsible for producing weapons for the German military and had certified to the Allied Control Commission that the tools used to produce these weapons had been destroyed. However, after Hitler's call for rearmament, the company, then under the control of Hugo Debach, immediately resumed producing weapons. Debach died shortly thereafter. From 1940, WMF began to make increasing use of forced labor from Soviet POWs in surrounding camps, with these eventually accounting for a third of the company's workforce. The WMF also founded its own concentration camp in 1944 to detain and force over 900 Hungarian Jewish women...
