Ye Huang Mixed Media

Chinese
Ye Huang received formal academic training in fine arts, developing a solid foundation in painting and design. He worked for many years as a designer at a Hunan embroidery factory, gaining extensive experience in embroidery painting design. Later, through a fortunate encounter, he became a disciple of the renowned Xiang embroidery master Cui Feng Huang. After years of dedicated study, Ye Huang earned his master’s full trust, who not only imparted all his artistic knowledge to him but also entrusted his daughter’s future to Ye. After Cui Feng Huang’s passing, Ye Huang inherited the mantle of the Huang school, carrying the responsibility of preserving and advancing its legacy. He has devoted himself to elevating embroidery art by integrating innovation and modern perspectives, creating a fresh vision for contemporary embroidery. His recent series, Lotus Pond Impressions and Dancing Peonies, have been widely admired and collected by new-generation art collectors. For embroidery artists, the painting serves as their stage. The designer of an embroidery draft must possess not only a painter’s skill but also a deep understanding of embroidery techniques, allowing them to leave creative space within the composition for the embroiderer to express beauty to its fullest. In recent years, Ye Huang’s Lotus Series has been recognized as his most creative achievement. His lotus flowers vary in mood: sometimes serene and refined, sometimes bold and full of vitality, achieving harmony between delicacy and intensity. Ye Huang’s embroidery demonstrates a distinctive personal style and a masterful balance of tradition and innovation. He believes that without new ideas, even a thousand-year-old craft will fade into history. By reinterpreting embroidery through a modern lens, Ye Huang has successfully infused it with contemporary flair and ensured that his artistry will hold a lasting place in the history of Chinese embroidery.

My Emotional Baggage Carts are vessels to dispose of racial trauma. The act of making, weaves the sting of macro and microaggressions into the cart, freeing me from these constraints. Each recovered shopping cart is unique, but they all are woven with upcycled materials like rope, paracord, grocery bags, rope lights, beads, fabric, and bottle caps. The cart is with a protective zip tie blanket to trap trauma and prevent its escape. For me, my Emotional Baggage Carts are a release, for you, they are an opportunity to look within and recognize any emotional baggage you, yourself may be carrying and release it. Theda Sandiford...
