Zaida del Río Art

Cuban, b. 1954
Born in Guadelupe las Villas Cuba, Zaida del Rio got her training at the Superior Institure of Art in Havana and the Ecole Beaux Arts in Paris. Zaida brings the spirit world and the physical world together in her complex drawings and images wrought with the magical realism frequently associated with Latin American art. She melds the natural world of healing plants and minerals within the human form, delving beneath the surface with an almost scientific approach to expose the complexity of the human body. Through drawing, painting, collage, and ceramics. Zaida del Rio brings her pantheon of spirits represented by mystical anthropomorphized beings, fish and birds, to create her own personal landscape. She explores and manipulates the religious iconography of Yoruba to illustrate the unique Cuban interpretation of Africa through Santeria. Zaida has had personal shows throughout Western Europe, Brazil and Cuba. She has participated in several Biennials in Cuba, South America and Japan.

Seishi Ai-oi Genji – Set of 12 Shunga works together w/astrological commentary

By Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III)

Located in Middletown, NY

Set of 12 woodblock prints in colors on handmade, laid mulberry paper, 6 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches (170 x 258 mm), printed in Ka-ei 4 (1851). Each print with minor handling wear, otherwise in excellent condition with bright and fresh color, and with details printed in silver ink. The images themselves contain several illusive characters indicating the publisher which are obfuscated by figures, as intended. Presented loose, as issued. A fine set. The astrological commentary print has a large and meandering blind stamp with a bird and palm frond motif. This print lists various phrases concerning the Twelve Zodiac Animals as historically counted in Japan, and appears to include erotic commentary on the traits of people born under each of the twelve signs. These Shunga images were issued in books that paralleled (in an erotic fashion...

"Postcard from Paris" Satirical Lithograph Humorous Screen Print by Charles Bragg (American, 1931-2017). Two nude individuals pose in a room partially covered by a piece of drapery and a flower vase. The woman wears a variety of costume jewelry and a crown and appears posed, while the man stands behind an old-fashioned camera and smiles. The surroundings are highly colorful, with pink wallpaper, blue curtains, and a variety of different plants. Both figures look towards the viewer, potentially nodding to the satirical nature of the piece. Numbered as "Artists Proof IX" in bottom left corner. Signed "Charles Bragg" in bottom right corner. Frame size: 20.88" H x 27" W Image size: 10.25" H x 17" W Charles Bragg (American, 1931-2017) was a painter, sculptor, and illustrator of commentary on human behavior, based out of Los Angeles, California. Bragg often injected his sense of humor and appreciation of satire into his subjects, many of which are cartoonish and seem half human and half animal. He also depicted serious subjects, ones that become poignant commentaries on the human condition. Bragg was born in St. Louis Missouri in 1931. His parents were vaudeville performers, and he spent most of his young life traveling on tour with them. During his teenage years, he went to New York's High School of Music & Art in Harlem. At 18, he ran away with his high school sweetheart, fellow artist Jennie Tomao...
