Antique Victorian Crazy Quilt in Silk Velvet and Embroidered Silks, Circa 1880s

Antique Victorian Crazy Quilt in Silk Velvet and Embroidered Silks, Circa 1880s

Located in Amsterdam, NY

This exquisite 27” x 27” Victorian Crazy Quilt, dating to the late 19th century, is a jewel-like example of America’s fascination with crazy quilting during the height of the Aesthetic Movement. Hand pieced from an assortment of silk velvets, silk satins, plush velvets, ribbons, novelty textiles, and fine cottons, every seam is lavishly embellished with hand embroidery, including feather stitch, herringbone, Cretan stitch, crossed stitches, buttonhole variations, spider-web motifs, floral sprays, and countless other decorative stitches.. Sequins, chenille, applied velvet medallions, and dimensional embroidery add further texture. The luxurious fabrics remain remarkably vibrant, displaying rich jewel tones of sapphire blue, ruby red, emerald green, amethyst, gold, ivory, black, and fuchsia. The variety of textiles reflects the Victorian custom of preserving treasured remnants from fashionable garments and household fabrics, transforming them into works of decorative art. Unlike traditional patchwork quilts designed primarily for warmth, crazy quilts celebrated artistic expression rather than geometric precision. Their asymmetrical compositions were inspired in part by Japanese aesthetics introduced to American audiences following the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. By the 1880s, these quilts had become symbols of refinement, creativity, and exceptional needlework, often displayed prominently in Victorian parlors. The quilt is finished with a pale sage-green cotton backing that has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding. Details Date: Circa 1885–1895 Origin: American Dimensions: 27” x 27” Materials: Silk velvet, silk satin, decorative silks, cotton backing, silk embroidery floss, sequins, and other embellishments Construction: Entirely hand pieced and hand embroidered Condition: Very good antique condition with expected age-related wear to the delicate silk fabrics. Colors remain vivid, and the extensive embroidery is beautifully preserved. The backing and binding are intact and consistent with the period. Victorian crazy quilt, antique crazy quilt...

Rare Exceptional Hand-Painted Nursery Rhyme “Scarborough Fair” Folk Art Quilt
Rare Exceptional Hand-Painted Nursery Rhyme “Scarborough Fair” Folk Art Quilt

Rare Exceptional Hand-Painted Nursery Rhyme “Scarborough Fair” Folk Art Quilt

Located in Amsterdam, NY

This is an extraordinary and highly unusual piece of 20th-century American folk art, this charming hand-painted quilt is embroidered with the date 1913 and the words “Scarborough Fair.", though the border and backing fabric are much newer, dating to approximately the 1950s or 1960s. The quilt has been sewing machine quilted in a simple outline of the border and enough to secure the lightweight batting. The amazing part of this quilt is the beautifully hand-painted flowering tree whose branches support a delightful collection of nursery rhyme and fairy tale scenes: Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill, the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, Cinderella’s pumpkin coach, playful animals, children, and other beloved storybook characters are beautifully hand-painted in rich watercolor-like tones. The artwork is remarkably sophisticated, displaying confident brushwork, subtle shading, and a carefully planned composition skillfully accomplished. The embroidered inscription reads: “This quilt completed in the year of our Lord 1913…" followed by the words “Scarborough Fair.” As stated above, the border and backing fabric are newer than 1913. Although the exact meaning of the Scarborough Fair reference remains unknown, the quilt was acquired from a collector in New York’s historic Hudson Valley. Condition: The quilt is in excellent condition with no condition issues noted. Details Date: Dated 1913 (border and backing fabric is much newer, dating to 1950s-1960s) Origin: Northeastern United States; acquired from a collector in New York’s Hudson Valley Dimensions: 45” x 74” Materials: Hand-painted cotton with cotton batting and cotton backing Construction: Wholecloth quilt with hand-painted decoration, hand-embroidered inscription, and sewing machine quilting Technique: Original hand-painted imagery with embroidered lettering Motifs: Nursery rhymes, fairy tales, flowering tree, whimsical children, animals, Cinderella, Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill, Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe Color Palette: Soft greens, blues, pinks, yellows, browns, cream, and black Antique hand-painted quilt, dated quilt, Scarborough Fair quilt, folk art quilt, nursery rhyme quilt, storybook quilt, Americana textile, Edwardian quilt, painted textile art, whimsical quilt, Hudson Valley antique...
