An elegant and increasingly scarce original 1920s evening dress, beautifully handmade in black silk with extensive fine lace panels. Unlabelled, as is common with privately made garments from the period, the dress displays the relaxed, elongated silhouette and sophisticated textile work associated with late 1920s evening fashion.
The body is fashioned from lightweight, semi-sheer black silk chiffon, creating a beautifully fluid line. Intricate floral and geometric lace panels decorate the upper bodice and extend dramatically through the lower skirt, arranged in pointed and scalloped formations that give the dress a particularly strong Art Deco character.
The softly rounded neckline and short, fluttering sheer sleeves balance the long column silhouette, while the lower skirt combines transparent lace, silk panels and elongated openings to produce graceful movement when worn. The contrast between the delicate chiffon and the richly patterned lace is especially striking.
The dress is entirely unlabelled and appears to have been individually handmade, rather than commercially mass-produced. Its construction, textiles and silhouette are consistent with original 1920s eveningwear.
A highly atmospheric survivor from the Jazz Age, suitable for an important vintage collection, period fashion archive, museum-inspired display or careful occasional wear. It would also style beautifully with long pearls, an Art Deco headpiece...
