Henry Chalfant (born January 2, 1940) is an American photographer and videographer most notable for his work on graffiti, breakdance, and hip hop culture. One of Chalfant's prints is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Education and career Chalfant is a graduate of Stanford University, where he majored in classical Greek. Starting out as a sculptor in New York City in the 1970s, Chalfant turned to photography and film to do an in-depth study of hip-hop culture and graffiti art. One of the foremost authorities on New York subway art, and other aspects of urban youth culture, his photographs record hundreds of ephemeral, original art works that have long since vanished.[1] His photographs have appeared in exhibitions of graffiti art from its early appearances in New York/New Wave at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center to retrospectives such as Art in the Streets at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and City as Canvas: Graffiti Art From the Martin Wong Collection at the Museum of the City of New York, in addition to galleries and museums in the United States, Europe, and Asia. In 1983, Chalfant co-produced the PBS documentary Style Wars, the seminal documentary about graffiti and hip hop culture.[2] Among Chalfant's other films are Flyin' Cut Sleeves, a documentary about Bronx street gang leaders in the 1970s and Visit Palestine: Ten Days on the West Bank, based on his visit to the occupied territories in 2000. His 2006 documentary From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale chronicles two generations who grew up on the same blocks of the Bronx, NY, using rhythm as their form of rebellion—for the older generation of the 1950s it was the rhythms of Cuba; for their children of the 1970s it was the rhythms of rap.[3] The film was featured in the Latino Public Broadcasting series Voces in 2006-2007, and won an Alma Award for Best Documentary. Searching for a place to call home, Padilla enlisted in the French military in his early 20’s before coming to the United States in 1976. With a job already lined up when he arrived, Padilla worked at a ritzy hair salon located on Madison Avenue and 72nd Street in New York City and was doing well for himself. While roaming and exploring the streets of New York City and becoming entrenched in his surroundings, Padilla discovered another creative outlet. “I started painting, drawing and developing my technique,” he said. “It took me about a year to create a painting that meant something, and it was a turning point. He also saw creating art as his “calling,” once he discovered “Thompson Park, the underground capital of homelessness in New York,” he said. Padilla found in their faces that human emotion, the same cloak of despair that he at times felt. First in his class in the Master's of Fine Art program at Syracuse University he was awarded the highest honor along with the Augusta Hazard scholarship to study abroad. In high school he entered a nationwide poster contest and won a four year scholarship to Syracuse, where today for one year's tuition the cost is $45,000. But he never got to use the Augusta Hazard award because World War II broke out and he went to New York City where he studied at the Art Students League and with artist Walt Kuhn as well as others. Hired by the General Electric company art department in Schenectady, N.Y. , he progressed over the 35 years he was there (the only job he had until retirement), to an art director. At General Electric he was a "Madison Avenue Ad Man" for many years, like those in the series "Mad Men", spending every week at General Electric headquarters in New York City. He was known to his fellow artists, many also renowned, as "the Renaissance Man" having a voracious appetite for reading and collecting art books...
