This fabulous circa 1902 cedar lined cigar box was made by Gorham as part of the company's Athenic range, introduced at the turn of the 20th century. The 3 pound 10 ounce rectangular mixed metal box has a copper body and bears decorative sterling silver ornamentation. The box rests on four silver pad form feet. The piece has a hinged lid which features a colorful inset enameled plaque at the center. The charming scene depicts an image after well regarded British artist and illustrator Cecil Aldin's 1830 work "The Oxford Coach". The underside is fully hallmarked and bears a Gorham date symbol which corresponds to 1902.

1920s Patinated Chinese Copper Dragon Box

An early 20th century copper box with a striking design of nine flying dragons, each in relief with four outstretched claws, horns, whiskers and sinuous bodies. Circa 1920.
The lid of the rectangular brass box has three dragons including one looking straight ahead and his body twisting almost in a knot. Each of the sides has one dragon, and the front and back each have two. All together there are a total of nine dragons, which is very auspicious to the Chinese. Clouds, which are represented by circular patterns, surrounding the dragons.
On the front of the lid is a generous lip, which facilitates opening the box. The inside of the lid and box are lined with fragrant sandalwood. A stout hinge helps hold the box open.
The box is very heavy and the brass has a nice shine.
MEASUREMENTS: 5.5" x 4" x 2" tall
CONDITION: The condition of both the box and the sandalwood lining is great, with no breaks, cracks or significant scratches. There is dime size spot on the top of the box.
