All handcrafted in the late 1800s this box is much better than anything you will be able to buy in today's stores. The design, its age and its practicality are one thing, but what makes this antique work of beauty really stand out is the honey colored, light nutwood exterior and interior. It is in superb condition and an absolute joy to look at. If you like it in our photos then you will love it in real life, because the patina is much better looking and warmer than in any of our photos. You can, again, take our word for it. This work of beauty will look great no matter where you decide to have it on display and it turns smoking a fine cigar into an even better experience, because who would not want to be offered a cigar like this. This finest of cigar boxes also comes with a perfect working lock...

Coromandel wood or Calamander wood is a valuable wood from India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It is of a hazel-brown color, with black stripes (or the other way about), very heavy and hard. It is also known as Macassar Ebony or variegated ebony and is closely related to genuine ebony, but is obtained from different species in the same genus; one of these is Diospyros quaesita Thwaites, from Sri Lanka. The name Calamander comes from the local sinhalese name, 'kalu-medhiriya', which means dark chamber; referring to the characteristic ebony black wood. Coromandel wood has been logged to extinction over the last 2 to 3 hundred years and is no longer available for new work in any quantity. Furniture in coromandel is so expensive and so well looked after that even recycling it is an unlikely source. A substitute, Macassar Ebony, has similar characteristics and to the untrained eye is nearly the same but it lacks the depth of colour seen in genuine Coromandel. Bramah is London's oldest security company. Established at 124 Piccadilly, London in 1784, and today based in Marylebone, London and Romford, Essex. Bramah made their first lock in 1784 and the patent was awarded in 1787. The designer was Joseph Bramah. Joseph Bramah was a leading inventor of the industrial revolution, patenting over 18 new ideas, including a new valve for the water closet (toilet), the hydraulic pump, a fountain pen, and a fire engine. Bramah also introduced a beer hand...

Antique Victorian Coromandel Silver Mounted Cigar Humidor, 1893, 19th Century
Located in London, GB
This is a magnificent antique Edwardian coromandel sterling silver mounted humidor, bearing the maker's marks of A & J Zimmerman with hallmarks for Birmingham 1893. This splendid humidor is of rectangular form with sterling silver escutcheons and mounts, and silver labels for Cigars and Cigarettes to the lids which pops up on either side of the handle to reveal a fitted cedar interior and feature a drawer in the centre of the base for lights. This humidor has a very stylish and timeless design which will make any cigar connoisseur happy. Condition: In excellent condition, having been cleaned and waxed in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation of condition. Dimensions in cm: Height 12 x width 27 x depth 18 Dimensions in inches: Height 4.7 x width 10.6 x depth 7.1 A& J Zimmerman was a silverware company founded in 1879 by Arthur S. Zimmerman and John Ulrich Zimmerman. The company was registered as a limited company in 1902, and finished trading in 1930. A& J Zimmerman owned workshops in Birmingham and London, as well as holding a London Showroom, though most of their pieces were assayed to Birmingham. Most of the items created under the name A & J Zimmerman were small, simple items of silverware such as photo frames and boxes, most surviving items are hallmarked between 1890 and 1910, which suggests that this period was the firms most prolific and successful. Little information survives of the history of the firm of A & J Zimmerman, however the lasting nature of so many of their items of silverware speaks to the quality and craftsmanship of their pieces. Humidor is any kind of box or room with constant humidity that is used to store cigars, cigarettes, orpipe tobacco. For private use, small wooden or acrylic glass humidor boxes for a few dozen cigars are used, while cigar shops may have walk-in humidors. Humidors can be used to store other goods for which a certain level of humidity is desirable; the Colorado Rockies Major League Baseball team stores game balls in a large humidor...
