About the Item

This box is an unusually large and decorative example of the work of this factory. It is the largest and best quality box of this type that we have ever offered. Both highly ornamental and functional, it is ideal for dressing table or more formal settings. The decoration is molded with bas-reliefs and painted with scenes from antiquity. The principal scene on the cover depicts the slaying of the Calydonian Boar with Meleager mounted at the kill and Atalanta following with a golden bow . The other four panels depict various scenes of drinking, feasting, bathing dancing and more erotic pleasures. These reliefs are framed by panels with garlands swags, cherubs and ribbons. The gilt painting, banding and brass hinged cover add to the richness of the presentation. They are incomparably finer reliefs than the later German examples in both molding and pallet. The box radiates a genuine and refined sensibility. This box is unmarked but we are convinced that it is by the Capo di Monte factory and not a German copy. It is accompanied by a card which asserts it is circa 1806, that it was from the Dowager Countess of Seafield's sale in 1885 when it fetched 272 pounds Sterling that it is from the Naples Royal factory. That all may be so but we stand by our own description. It has rather a Fine hinge, but the exterior mount suggests a later date.

This parquetry desk has the attributes one would expect when bearing the name to one of Paris leading retailers of objet deluxe. It is bombe...gently swelling and raised on cabriole legs. It is applied with oval porcelain panels which we have not dismounted but are to Sevres standard. It extensively mounted with bronze chutes sabots and moldings of various sorts. Including a bronze pierced plaque with the monogram of the owner. It is in a small way, highly evocative of 19th century Paris at its best. This company flourished between the consulate and 1867 when it closed. It enjoyed Royal patronage and was certainly a leading supplier of luxury goods of the highest quality. Maison Giroux, the famous curiosity and luxury goods shop, was situated at No. 7 rue du Coq-Saint-Honoré and in business from the time of the Consulate until the end of the Second Empire.
