Pair of French Napoleon III Bronze Figural Candelabra by Charles Ferrat, c. 1870
By Charles Hippolyte Marcellin Ferrat
Located in Shippensburg, PA
Greek female figurals, each with complex and chaotic folds and twists of their togas falling with perfect realism against their bodies, raise stylized water jars on their shoulders from which project a substantial six-light array of candelabra. Each candle well is beautifully treated with relief of vines and scattered berries with a gilded chain and teardrop finial hanging from each arm. The figures stand over faceted slate bases with inset bronze plaques displaying classical scenes. A perfect glowing patina with gorgeous smooth high burnish surfaces finish the figures most attractively, each being signed by their feet along the circular base “Hte Ferrat”. The angularity and distinctly Neoclassical form allow the pair to perfectly meld with more austere interiors and modern settings as smoothly as the classical. Untouched and never electrified, this is a most Fine acquisition for anyone passionate about excellent sculpture.
Born in the Aix-en-Provence of France on April 26, 1830, Charles Hippolyte Marcellin Ferrat studied under Francisque Duret...
