Timber Mazer 900 Sculpture by Tom Fereday
By Tom Fereday
Located in Geneve, CH
Timber Mazer 900 Sculpture by Tom Fereday
Dimensions: W 90 x D 90 x H 35 cm
Materials: Solid Oak & Walnut.
MAZER COLLECTION:
Mazer represents a series of geometric sculptures, each a celebration of the fundamental beauty and natural variation of stone. Strict brutalist forms of the table and seating collection are juxtaposed by soft organic cutaways carving through the porous stone surfaces, revealing the natural beauty and character of travertine. Named after the medieval term ‘Mazer’ meaning bowl, the collection presents subtle organic forms proportioned for table and seating function designed for permanence. Porous formations of the stone’s structure act as an intentional disruption to the clean geometric forms of the series adding character and intrigue. The limited edition series was crafted from travertine and locally produced in Italy from a combination of machine and traditional hand made processes, each piece exhibiting its own unique characteristics and form with no one piece alike. Mazer is designed by Australian designer Tom Fereday exemplifying Fereday’s desire to honour materiality, combining form and function to produce enduring works.
Tom Fereday develops products based on the principle of honest design, conveying a design process which celebrates the materials and manufacturing processes behind furniture and products, to design from the inside out. By using the materials and environment as a positive design constraint we guide intelligent and thoughtful design outcomes which connect with people through natural materials, tactile finishes and unique design. We strive to create enduring designs which are meaningful to people and their environment.
Born in Australia, Tom Fereday grew up in England studying at the Wimbledon School of Art before moving to Sydney to complete an honours in Industrial Design at the University of Technology Sydney. Working across europe and Australia Tom Fereday went onto found his sole practice in 2012.

Totemic Head Sculpture Unsigned by Jencik, Melbourne, 1998
By Paul Jencik
Located in Melbourne, AU
Another wonderful marble sculpture with an intriguing provenance. Unsigned. Part of a series by Paul Jencik, circa 1998-2001.
This ‘totemic head’ sculpture is carved from a single block of marble in a snowy white. It’s the remaining head from a much larger totemic sculpture, the base now lost. This figurative face can be interpreted in many ways. Jencik references human, animal and natural forms but never quite allows us to reach a conclusion about the origins of his creations.
Jencik was a welder, boat builder and metal worker with a strong creative instinct but without the opportunity or artistic training that would afford his work any recognition. He created a large series of marble and timber sculptures...

Pair of Papua New Guinea Wooden Oceanic War Shields on Custom Iron Stands
Located in Atlanta, GA
A pair of Papua New Guinea wooden shields on custom stands from the mid-20th century. These oceanic war shields were not only created for protecting oneself for tribal warfare, but also in ancestral and ritual worship. They are adorn in various motifs, coloring and symbolism, intended to protect the carrier from magic and bring fear to the opponent. The shorter shield is from the Mendi area within the Southern Highlands. The taller shield originates from the Melpa tribe of the Western Highlands (Mount Hagen and Wahgi Valley), an area which was not discovered by the outside world until three Australian gold prospectors entered the region during their explorations in 1934. These shields are displayed upright on a custom black iron stand, with the tallest of the set standing at a height of over 5.5 ft tall. This pair of Papua New Guinea shields...

Rockefeller Irivake Figure
Located in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Nuevo Leon
Abstract and anthropomorphic large figure from the Pie River, located to the east of the Era River. Abstract, anthropomorphic form stands on separate legs with dynamic varying outline, wide hips, and torso leading straight to a rounded head.
Figure represents Irivake, the ancestor hero who is considered as the founder of headhunting, also believed to have climbed to the sky and to command lightning. It is enlivened with various curvilinear details highlighted with red and white pigments. The back appears with a collection number in red, and the following: Ipigau (village), Upper Pie River, Papua, P63.20.
This is a 'later example', not a first generation piece with several age cracks. It has likely seen field use, but not extensive field use.
Provenance: Private New Jersey Collection, ex. Michael Rockefeller...
