About the Item

lead bread half hand-sliced by artist Bruno Kristo shown at 'Brood Casting' exhibition. Bruno Kristo transforms an everyday staple into a striking sculptural statement with this loaf of bread with hand-carved slices, crafted entirely from solid lead. Created in 2025 as part of his ongoing 'Broodcasting' series, the work juxtaposes nourishment and heaviness, fragility and permanence. The familiar form of sliced bread is reimagined here as something enduring yet unsettling — a symbol of sustenance rendered in a material that denies consumption. Kristo’s meticulous handwork preserves the gestures of cutting and sharing, while the cold metallic surface resists their meaning. This piece stands as both an object of contemplation and a testament to the artist’s exploration of transformation, memory, and the weight of the everyday. "Brood Casting" is a whimsical yet profound series of sculptures that combines the technique of metal casting with a playful and conceptual approach. Inspired by the wordplay between 'Broadcast' and 'Brood' (bread in Dutch), the project centers on creating metal bread slices, representing both humor and the necessity of sustenance for artists. Although the work appears light and humorous, it conceals a deeper reflection on the survival needs of artists and the creative means they employ to achieve it. Combined with the childlike and fragmented aspect of the bread slices, Brood Casting harkens back to the avant- garde movements of the early 20th century, where the idea behind a work was often moreimportant than its realistic representation. About Bruno Kristo: Bruno Kristo is a visual artist whose practice bridges prehistoric and modern worlds. His work combines childlike forms with meticulous execution, evoking a delicate contrast between play and precision. He crafts his creations using various metals, as well as MDF, silicone, and whatever else fitshis purpose. He bends his materials to imagination through an array of master-level skills which he's been developing and continuously refining over the course of nearly three decades of academic study, apprenticeship with experts, and hands-on experience and experimentation. As in Paleolithic art, Kristo forgoes words, inviting you to anchor yourself in sight and feeling. 2025 Solo exhibition 'Brood Casting' Puttenaers gallery Group exhibition Oostende - Noir de Noir concept gallery, 'de klas van...'
