This remarkable and very finely carved study of the biblical figure of St Paul, The Apostle who was originally Saul of Tarsus born BCE. Tarsus in Cilicia (now in Turkey). He died circa 62 – 64 CE in Rome, Italy. He was one of the leaders of the first generation Christians and was often considered to be the most important person after Jesus in the history of Christianity. This highly accomplished wood carving is a difficult material for detailing English oak. It shows him standing barefoot and dressed in simple robes with a sword in one hand and a scroll in the other. His face has been well captured with a good expression, detailed hair and a long beard. The small scale of this figure would indicate it was not originally church decoration...

Strict brutalist forms of the table and seating collection are juxtaposed by soft organic cutaways carving through the porous stone surfaces, revealing the natural beauty and character of travertine. Named after the medieval term ‘Mazer’ meaning bowl, the collection presents subtle organic forms proportioned for table and seating function designed for permanence. Porous formations of the stone’s structure act as an intentional disruption to the clean geometric forms of the series adding character and intrigue. The limited edition series was crafted from travertine and locally produced in Italy from a combination of machine and traditional hand made processes, each piece exhibiting its own unique characteristics and form with no one piece alike. Mazer is designed by Australian designer Tom Fereday exemplifying Fereday’s desire to honour materiality, combining form and function to produce enduring works. Tom Fereday develops products based on the principle of honest design, conveying a design process which celebrates the materials and manufacturing processes behind furniture and products, to design from the inside out. By using the materials and environment as a positive design constraint we guide intelligent and thoughtful design outcomes which connect with people through natural materials, tactile finishes and unique design.
